No arrests in motel slayings

no arrests but hope a security video will help identify t
wo men shown shooting three people to death on Thanksgiving in the lobby of the Airport Inn in Birmingham.
Jefferson County Deputy Coroner Jack Parker identified the dead as front-desk clerk Kim Olney, 28, of Birmingham; Dorothy Smith, 58, of Flushing, N.Y.; and a 42-year-old truck driver, John Franklin Aylesworth, Sulphur Springs, Texas.
Motel manager Rufus Carroll confirmed that Olney was the motel clerk, on the job only three weeks. He had no details about Smith, who may have arrived to check in.
Aylesworth had been a guest while waiting for his truck to be repaired. He had checked out Thursday and was in the lobby waiting for a ride when the shots were fired about 3 p.m., police said.
The bodies were found about 30 minutes after the shootings by a hurricane evacuee staying at the motel.
The security video also showed the two men fleeing with a cash drawer containing about $300 and a sm
all safe.
Police
Capt. Herman Hinton said the men may have killed the three victims to elimina
te witnesses.
"This is a heinous crime," he said.
Located near the Birmingham International Airport, the motel was temporarily closed following the shootings.
Carroll said Saturday he closed to give employees a chance "to clear their heads" before the motel reopens sometime this week.
