Bullard man robbed, beaten, and left for dead; suspects charged with capital murder

Updated November 25 at 1:31 PM

SMITH COUNTY, TX (KLTV) - Three East Texans are behind bars tonight after deputies say they robbed and killed an elderly man.

It started out as a routine welfare check when Tyler police received a tip saying the victim needed to be checked on. Tyler police notified Smith County deputies who went to the house around 3:45, he was nowhere to be found, until deputies checked the backyard.

“They checked an outbuilding, which was locked, they had to force entry because they had seen a victim laying on the floor that appeared to be deceased and was later determined to be deceased,” Smith County Sheriff Larry Smith says.

77- year old Roy Bowins lived in his house alone, on County Road 121 in Bullard.

Sheriff Smith says Bowins was robbed on November 13th, where he was beaten and left to die in a shed in his own backyard.

“We have recovered some stolen property, to include the vehicle, the 2015 Chevrolet Impala that was stolen from the victim during the burglary,” Sheriff Smith says.

Because of a tip, deputies were able to find two suspects late Friday night, at a hotel in the four corners, off Highway 69 and Loop 323 in Tyler. 25-year old Krystal Dixon and 19-year old Tationna Mosley.

And just recently, as of 1:15 Saturday afternoon, deputies were able to find and arrest 22-year old Brentavian Henderson in the same location.

Editor’s note: A previous version of this story incorrectly stated the sentences would run concurrently.

TYLER, Texas (KLTV) - A Bullard man will start a life sentence in prison after pleading guilty in the death of a 77-year-old man.

Brentavian Keshawn Henderson, 25, pleaded guilty to charges of murder and aggravated robbery Monday in Judge Kerry Russell’s court. Henderson accepted a 40-year sentence on the second charge, which will run after the life sentence.

Henderson was arrested in Feb. 2019 after Roy Bowins was found dead in a shed on his property. Henderson had killed Bowins while stealing a car and two televisions from his home.

Henderson was indicted on a capital murder charge. Russell accepted the agreement for Henderson to plead to the lesser charge.

Because the charges are stacked, it will be at least 50 years before Henderson is eligible for parole.

SMITH COUNTY, TEXAS (KLTV) - Two East Texas women have been sentenced in connection with a burglary that left an elderly Bullard man dead.

Tationna Mosley, 19, was sentenced Thursday to 10 years adjudicated probation for a charge of burglary and tampering with physical evidence. Mosley was also ordered to take a life skills class.

A second person involved in the incident also appeared in court Thursday for a pre-trial hearing for her role in the same crime.

During the hearing, Krystal Dixon, 25, entered a guilty plea to charges of burglary and tampering with physical evidence. Sentencing has been set for 10:30 a.m. June 28.

Mosley and Dixon, along with Brentavian Henderson, 22, were arrested back in November 2018 after Smith County deputies found Roy Bowins, 77, dead on the floor of a shed behind his home on County Road 121 in Bullard.

Bowins was found by deputies who were responding to a check welfare call at the residence. At the time, Smith County Sheriff Larry Smith said the deputies had to force their way into the shed after seeing the victim lying on the floor.

According to an affidavit filed by law enforcement officers, investigators found evidence in Bowins’ home of him having been dragged from the house to the outdoor building. There was also evidence of blunt force trauma to the neck, face, and head.

The affidavit alleges Henderson killed Bowins while stealing a car and two televisions from his home and that his sister, Dixon, and his girlfriend, Mosley, were his accomplices.
