Bond was set at $250,000 for the man charged with the murder of Sumrall resident Kimberly Raynes.

During an initial appearance Friday in Lamar County Justice Court, Municipal Court Judge George Gunter set bond for Donald King Jr., 35, at $250,000 for first-degree murder and $10,000 for possession of a weapon by a felon. A preliminary hearing for King, 35, of Sumrall is scheduled for noon Monday.

Kimberly Raynes, 44, was found dead May 18 outside a home on Mulberry Street in Sumrall. A preliminary autopsy report released May 19 by the state medical examiner showed she died of a single gunshot wound, but police officials declined to say where on her body the wound was found.

Assistant Sumrall police chief Tony Kepper said in an earlier story that Kimberly Raynes was not a resident at the home where her body was discovered.

King was charged Wednesday in Kimberly Raynes' death. King has been in custody since May 19 — just one day after Kimberly Raynes was killed — when he was arrested in Simpson County for conspiracy to commit a crime, according to MDOC.

It's been two years since he's been able to call the woman he loves. Two years since he's held her in his arms.

Jamie Raynes of Sumrall still picks up the phone once in awhile to call his wife and tell her about his day only to realize she's not going to answer.

Kimberly Lucus Raynes was murdered May 18, 2016, in Sumrall — killed by a single gunshot wound. She was 44.

Donald King Jr. pleaded guilty to killing Kimberly Raynes on May 14. He was sentenced May 18 — the second anniversary of Kimberly's death.

Raynes said the autopsy report showed his wife was murdered between 8:30 and 10:30 a.m. Judge Anthony Mozingo sentenced King at 9:30 a.m.

"It was kind of ironic," Raynes said.

King will serve 40 years in prison with no possibility of early release.

"We were happy with the sentence," Raynes said. "We just wish he would tell why, but he hasn't done that. Don't know if he ever will."

King did not say anything when he was sentenced. Raynes said King just shook his head when Mozingo asked if he wanted to say anything.

"It makes me angry to think about him," Raynes said.

Jamie Raynes said it is still difficult trying to adjust to life without his wife.

"My life has changed like day and night," he said. "Me and Kim were best of sweethearts. We've basically been side by side 30 years or longer. But she's not here anymore."

Raynes works on the road, but he and Kimberly would talk or text throughout the day when he was away.

"Even though it's been two years, I still — sometimes I catch myself — I call her name to ask her something," he said. "It's not as much anymore as it was but it's hard to stop."

The couple has two adult children, son Casey Raynes and daughter Taylor Raynes Culver, and six grandchildren.

Raynes said he and his wife had made plans to retire early to spend time with their grandchildren and do things they enjoyed together.

"We were fortunate that we would have been able to retire early — around age 60," he said. "We were looking forward to that. I'm not going to have all that. The kids aren't going to have all that. The grandkids."

Raynes said when his 5-year-old grandson Gavin sees fireflies at night he says it's his Nonie winking at him.

"He still remembers her like it was yesterday," he said. "They were that close."

Raynes said he hopes by sharing his story, other people will take more time to tell their family and friends how much they are loved and to never let a day go by without them knowing it.

"Never take for granted that tomorrow is given," he said. "Always tell the people you love that you love them, hug on them."

Raynes said he wishes he had chosen a different profession early on so he would have been able to spend more time with his wife while she was alive.

"But I can't go back," he said.

Was she on the porch just knocking on the door, asking for help? Did her car break down?
We're not being told. Thee 'precious' news implies she's there for other reasons.

A Wednesday night death investigation in Sumrall has now been ruled a homicide.

Kimberly Lucus-Raynes, 44, was found deceased outside a home at 11 Mulberry Street in Sumrall.

The body was sent to the state crime lab in Jackson, and the preliminary autopsy showed that Raynes died from a single gunshot wound.

According to Sumrall Police Chief Chris Dungan, the call came in just after 5 p.m. and the caller stated a woman was on the porch of the home on Mulberry St.

Mississippi Bureau of Investigations and investigators from the 15th District Attorney's Office were called in to assist the Sumrall Police with the investigation.
