CULVER CITY, Calif. -- An argument was the apparent cause of a crash in which a car veered onto a sidewalk, killing a young teacher and injuring eight of her students, police said Thursday.

oro-->Laura Samayoa, 20, and her passenger, Reynaldo Cruz, 19, both of Los Angeles, were booked on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence and are being held in lieu of $400,000 bail, said Culver City police Sgt. Mike Poulin.
The teacher, Carrie Elaine Phil
lips, 24, of Goleta, was color=red]fatally injured[/color], according to the coroner's office.
Phillips was walking behind the students when she was hit Wednesday and died at the
scene. She taught physical education at Turning Point School.
Students wept and prayed Thursday at a sidewalk memorial for Phillips.

According to NBC4, Cruz denied grabbing the steering wheel.
"What we know for sure, at least we feel confident stating, that there was an argument between the two parties," Culver City police Lt. Dean Williams said at a news conference Thursd
ay morning.
"Whether or not the wheel was grabbed or there was any other type of altercation, we're not sure. But <!--/coloro
-->as a result of that argument the vehicle left the road and struck the teacher and the students," Williams said.
Students and teachers were returning to the Turning Point School from a neighborhood park around 3 p.m. Wednesday when the vehicle plowed into them in the 8500 block of West National Boulevard, Poulin said.
"It was like a bowling ball had impacted bowling pins; they just went flying," witness Dennis Bonilla told NBC4.
Even though Samayoa said Cruz caused the collision, investigators decided there was enough evidence to book both of them, authorities said.
Samayoa and Cruz walked away from the scene in separate directions, witnesses told police.<!--/colorc--

"An eyewitness, actually, who also telephoned the police station and reported it followed (Samayoa) and said, 'You need to return to the s
cene,"' Williams said. The witness waved down police, who arrested Samayoa.
A teacher tried to convince Cruz to stay, but he left, Williams said. Cruz turned himself in at the Culver City police station Wednesday night.
Five students were taken to UCLA Medical Center. Three were in good condition and two were in fair condition, according to hospital officials. Three other students suffered lesser injuries, fire officials said.
