Sgt. William McEntee died at a St. Louis County hospital several hours after the shooting about 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Kirkwood Police Chief Ja
ck Plummer said.
Plummer said the gunman a man approached McEntee, made some "bizarre statements" and shot him several times.

"He was
responding to a call that had absolutely nothing to do with the shooting," Plummer said. "Our man was ambushed."

Police have identified their suspect as Kevin Johnson, 19. Police say he is considered armed and dangerous and he may be carrying the officer's sidearm in addition to the gun used in the attack.

Officers from several nearby departments and the Missouri State Highway Patrol joined Kirkwood police in searching for Johnson, who Plummer said frequented the neighborhood where the shooting took place. A St. Louis County SWAT team began searching homes and cars in the neighborhood shortly after 10 p.m.

Police say Johnson may be driving a white Ford Explorer with
Missouri license plates 052 XSR.

McEntee, a married father of three, had been with the Kirkwood department since 1981 and was the city's first police officer to be fatally shot, Plummer said.

A boy also was injured during the
shooting and treated at an area hospital, Plummer said. His condition was not released.

A Kirkwood police sergeant died Tuesday night, several hours after being shot at an apartment complex near Interstate 44 and Big Bend Road.

Segeant William McEntee spent more than 20 years on the Kirkwood police force, and is the first Kirkwood officer ever killed in the line of duty.

The attack happened in the 300 block of Alsobrook. Sgt. McEntee was shot in the face.

Kirkw
ood Police Chief Jack Plummer said McEntee went to the address due to a complaint about fireworks. That's where McEntee reportedly en
countered 19 year old Kevin Johnson, also known as Kevin Tatum. Johnson was making what the Kirkwood police chief described as bizarre statements. Without warning, Johnson allegedly shot McEntee. A juvenile apparantly was also shot, but there are conflicting reports as to that juvenile's condition and whether he survived the shooting.

Heavily armed officers raced to the scene, but were unable to find Johnson. Police say he should be considered armed and very dangerous. Johnson has not been charged in the case.

Johnson is described as 5'7" and 160 lbs. He is known to have lived in the 400 block of Saratoga.

St. Louis County Police have taken over the investigation.

Those who knew Sgt. McEntee say he was active at St. Simon the Apostle Catholic Church in Affton, and was a graduate of Bishop DuBourg High School, where he played on the 1
979 soccer team that finished second in the state playoffs.

KIRKWOOD POLICE SERGEANT KILLED

KIRKWOOD, Mo. (AP) -- As police mourned the loss of a suburban St. Louis officer ambushed and killed while investigating a fireworks disturbance, the search continued for the man who shot him. Kirkwood Sgt. William McEntee, 43, died at a hospital several hours after the shooting, which occurred about 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Kirkwood Police Chief Jack Plummer said. Plummer said the gunman approached McEntee, made some "bizarre statements" and shot him several times. "He was responding to a call that had absolutely nothing to do with the shooting," Plummer said. "Our man was ambushed." Police were saying little else about the incident except that McEntee was shot while in his car. A boy also was injured during the shooting. He was in stable condition. His name, age and details of his injury were not released. Officers from several nearby
departments and the Missouri State Highway Patrol j
oined Kirkwood police in searching for the suspect, whom police identified as 19-year-old Kevin Johnson of Kirkwood. Police said Johnson frequented the neighborhood where the shooting took place. A St. Louis County SWAT team began searching homes and cars in the neighborhood shortly after 10 p.m. McEntee was a married father of three children ages 7, 10 and 13, police said. The 6-foot-4-inch officer coached his children's little league teams. He had been with the department since 1981 and was the first police officer to be fatally shot in modern times in the well-to-do suburban town, Plummer said. Police said a town marshal was killed in the 1800s. Plummer said McEntee came from a long line of police officers.

"He was a very, very good sergeant," Plummer said. Soon after the shooting, several officers stood behind a patrol car with their guns drawn, pointing toward a home in the neighborhood. But no one was captured there. A police offi
cer who declined to give his name said a brother of Johnson died
earlier Tuesday due to illness. That officer said the death of Johnson's brother "could have played a role" in the shooting, but he declined to elaborate. By midday, dozens of flowers, balloons and notes adorned the lawn of the Kirkwood police department. Brenda Johnson, who is not related to Kevin Johnson, said she was concerned that the suspect was at large. But mostly, she was grieving the loss of the officer, whom she called a friend. "He was real kind, gentle, always cared for people," Johnson said after leaving a balloon and flower arrangement. "He was just the greatest guy I ever knew."

MANHUNT FOR SUSPECT KEVIN JOHNSON

The local part of the manhunt is being scaled back Wednesday morning as St. Louis County police plan to pull out of the Meachum
Park neighborhood. At this point, police are confident the suspect is no longer in that neighborhood. 19-year-old Kevin Johnson is the suspect in Tuesd
ay night's murder of a Kirkwood police officer. Investigators believe Sergeant William McEntee was shot in the face after responding to a fireworks call about 7:45pm Tuesday night. Meachum Park is behind the Kirkwood Commons Shopping Center. Armed police officers and tactical team units went door-to-door with their weapons drawn in search of Johnson. They also used helicopters and search dogs in their hunt. Sergeant McEntee was a 24-year veteran of the Kirkwood Police Department. McEntee is the first officer killed in the department's history. He is the father of two children. During this entire manhunt, neighbors have been tense and scared. One neighbor said, "My concern now is just safety for the kids. Right now I'm walking my kids to summer school. It's a scary thing to happen in your neighborhood."

Police have issued an Al
l Points Bulletin for Johnson that is distributed throughout the St. Louis area, Missouri and Illinois. Kevin Johnson is also known as "Rockhead". He is a black male standing
5'7" tall weighing about 160 pounds. He was last seen wearing a red jersey and blue shorts.

Police say it's possible that the suspect is driving a white Ford Explorer with Missouri license plate 052-XSR. If you see this vehicle, call Kirkwood police

Short update:

KIRKWOOD POLICE OFFICER KILLED; DONATION AND VISITATION INFO
According to police, Sergeant William McEntee arrived on the scene in Kirkwood Tuesday night after receiving a call that pertained to fireworks. It had nothing to do with the shooting itself. A 13-year-old male approached Sergeant McEntee's car. He was talking with him from his car. Then, the suspect, 19-year-old Kevin Johnson, approached the police car and fired into the car, hitting Sergeant McEntee and the child. The child was hit in the leg, and it was not a life-threatening injury. Sergeant McEntee's car then went down the road and hit another car and came to rest against a tree. Police say Kevin Johnson went up to the police car and fired several shots into the car, hitting Sergeant McEntee again. Right now there is a massive search underway. Police say he's been spotted in numerous locations. The
y do not know where he is. It is
of the upmost importance to bring this investigation to a close as a matter of public safety to get Johnson into custody. Police also said that after Johnson shot Sergeant McEntee, he took the officer's service weapon. Police have recovered the white Explorer that they believe Johnson was travelling in. They recovered that Wednesday morning in Ferguson at an apartment complex. They do not have a description of the vehicle he may be in right now. They also would not elaborate on what they think may have provoked the attack, but there is speculation that possibly a friend or family member of the suspect had died earlier on Tuesday of an illness. They say he may have been distraught over the death of that person and it could have played a role into why he "ambushed" Sergeant McEntee. He is the second Kirkwood police officer to be killed in the line of duty. The first one occurred back in 1898.

If you would like to donate to th
e Backstoppers in McEntee's memory, please send a check to:
Backstoppers; PO BOX 66927; St. Louis, MO 63166. Let them know you want it to go to the McEntee's family. Backstoppers is also continuing to sell the black bands to remember fallen officers for $5.00.

Visitation will be Friday, July 8 from 2:00pm to 9:00pm at the Kutis Funeral Home at 10151 Gravois in Affton. The funeral will be Saturday, July 9th at 10:15am with a prayer service at Kutis, followed by an 11:00am mass at St. Simon's Catholic Church 11011 Mueller Road. Immediately following mass will be a burial at Resurrection Cemetery.

Missouri: Black Teen Kills Officer, Still Loose

johnson_mcentee.jpg

Black with nickname "Rockhead" shoots policeman dead without warning.

A Kirkwood, MO police sergeant died Tuesday night, several hours after being shot at an apartment complex near Interstate 44 and Big Bend Road.

Sergeant William McEntee (pictured, right), 43, a married father of three, spent some 20 years on the Kirkwood police force, in the St. Louis area, and is the first Kirkwood officer killed since 1900 in the line of duty. Kirkwood annexed the area where the killing took place in the 1990s, and some Black residents there say the neighborhood is "tense" and that they are "treated as outsiders."

The attack happened in the 300 block of Alsobrook. Sgt. McEntee was
shot in the head.

Police say he was responding to a fireworks call, and was talking to a 13-year-old male.
McEntee was sitting in his car talking to the teen, who was standing outside the driver's side door, when the 19-year-old Kevin Johnson (pictured, left) started shooting.

When McEntee was first hit, his car rolled forward and was stopped by a tree. Johnson then reportedly walked up to the car in full view of the crowd which had gathered, fired several more shots into McEntee at close range, took the officer's service revolver, and walked off.

Johnson's relatives say he was "overwrought" over the death of his brother from natural causes a few hours earlier, but other witnesses say he simply went into a rage upon seeing a police officer nearby, since he was wanted for a probation violation stemming from a domestic assault.

He is still at large.

POLICE SOURCES SAY KEVIN JOHNSON IS IN CUSTODY

Police sources at the visitation for Sergeant Bill McEntee are confirming the suspect Kevin Johnson has been arrested in the North St. Louis County precinct by county police. They apparently got Johnson late Friday afternoon around 5:30pm. They say they arrested him at the Ventura Village Apartment Complex where they were searc
hing on Thursday afternoon. The neighborhood believes the streets are safer now that Johnson is under arrest. There is
a big sense of relief now that they have this man in custody.

POLICE SAY THEY'RE WORRIED WITNESSES WON'T COME FORWARD

Law enforcement sources say they're worried some witnesses to the murder of Kirkwood Police Sergeant Bill McEntee will refuse to come forward. Police and prosecutors say they don't think that people in the Meacham Park neighborhood of Kirkwood who refuse to talk will get in the way of the prosecution of Kevin Johnson. At least they hope not.

Thursday night, we brought you the story of some Meacham Park residents reluctant to talk to police. Among them was Missy Sloan who leaned over a wounded officer McEntee to call for help on his police radio. She refuses to talk to police. She talked to us. Other witnesses have claimed Johnson walked up to a wounded McEntee and finished him off with a volley of shots. "He was still in the car." When we asked if she saw Kevin Johnson come up and shoot him again
, she did not want to comment on that. Law enfor
cement sources say they think they have enough witness statements from that night with names and addresses that a sudden lapse of memory shouldn't stop prosecution of Johnson. But they are worried about the unlikely event of what they call nullification--witnesses refusing to say what they saw. Eyewitnesses are vital to their case, because police still have not recovered either the 9-millimeter murder weapon or the officer's 40-caliber pistol that was taken from his body.

Sources also say police want to talk to Kevin Johnson, Sr. (pictured below), the accused shooter's father. He spent 12 years in prison himself for second-degree murder. Law enforcement officials suspect he might have helped his son evade police right after the shooting. And it turns out the night of the shooting, Johnson was wanted for violating probation for domestic assault against the mother of a little girl. That girl is now 2 years old. The mot
her is now 15. She was 14 at the time Johnson assaulted her and 13 when
she became pregnant.
We must emphasize that there is no warrant for Kevin Johnson, Sr.'s arrest. The police just want to talk to him.

Radio Uproar, As DJs Give Tips About Hurting Police Officers

(J*w-owned-channel - ahh, err, I meant "clearchannel")

05714175740_CLEARCHANNEL.jpg

The beat goes on at KATZ radio, 100.3 on the FM dial. But the radio station finds itself at the center of a major controversy, due to on-air comments about hurting police officers.

Wednesday morning, KATZ personalities "DJ Kaos" and "DJ Silli Asz" gave their audience tips on how to disarm and injure police officers. One bit of advice told people to fight for the officer's radio so he can't call for help.

O'Fallon, Missouri police Sergeant Tom Otten is livid. "They need to be fired, ab
solutely, they need to be fired. And I think there needs to be a public apology to officers on that radio station."

KATZ owner Clear
Channel Communications suspended the employees for two days, and stressed in an apology that the station "takes pride in supporting and assisting local law enforcement whenever possible." The employees must also do a ride-along with police to see how they do their jobs.

St. Louis Police Chief Joe Mokwa called on-air comments wrong and inappropriate, but seemed willing to forgive. "They made a mistake. I'm willing to move on and forget about it."

But Sergeant Otten is far from satisfied by the punishment. "What does a suspension do? It does nothing. That shows a horrible lack of character and moral judgment"

If the deejays aren't fired, Otten vows to write and call his fellow officers to have them contact the KATZ advertisers, and urge them to remove their ads.

The timing of the radio remarks makes a b
ad situation far worse. It was just a week ago that Kirkwood police sergeant Bill McEntee was shot and killed while on duty. "Something like that would never be acceptable, but to co
me right after one of our fellow officers was shot and murdered for nothing, that's just horrible,"
said Otten. "That's like spitting in the family's face."

Here is the release from Clear Channel:

ST. LOUIS (July 14, 2005) - On behalf of the staff and management of KATZ -FM, I want to extend my sincere apologies for the comments made on the Kaos Morning Show yesterday. The comments were entirely inappropriate, and we have reprimanded and suspended the announcers.

KATZ -FM takes pride in supporting and assisting local law enforcement whenever possible. Just last week we used our stations in asking the public to step forward with information which eventually led to the arrest of the suspect in the killing of Sgt McEntee.

Our law enforcement
officials risk their lives to protect our citizens and in return deserve our appreciation and respect. I genuinely regret that this incident occurred.

Sincerely, Lee Clear
General Manager, KATZ-FM

DJs Placed On "Indefinite Suspension" After Discussing Ways To Disarm Police

0572792755_radiodjs.jpg

Two local radio DJs, suspended for hosting a discussion on how to harm or disarm police officers, are on "indefinite suspension."

The discussion with callers took place two weeks ago on 100.3 "The Beat."

At the time, station management suspended the two for just a few days.

It's reported that callers to the morning show and the two DJs discussed how to fight a police officer for their radio so they couldn't call for help.

The comments were made one week after the murder of Kirkwood Police Sergeant Bill McEntee.

Station Manager Lee Clear is expected to issue a statement about the DJs' status Wednesday.

Clear Ch
annel Communications, which owns The Beat, is in talks with the organization which represents St. Louis area police chiefs.

The loca
l Fraternal Order of Police says the incident will be a topic of discussion at next month's national conference in New Orleans.

D.J.'s Fired For Comments On Disarming Police

Clear Channel Communication has fired two of its D.J.'s with KATZ, 100.3 'The Beat.'

Radio personalities D.J. Kaos and D.J. Silly Asz gave their listeners tips on how to disarm and injure police.

That came just days after Kirkwood police officer William McEntee was shot and killed in the line of duty.

The comments outraged many listeners and police, who threatened to boycott the station.

Wednesday, Clear Channel GM of KATZ Lee Clear announced the two d.j.'s were no longer with the station.

He faxed this statement to NewsChannel 5.

"We have tremendous respect for the men and women who risk their lives everyday to serve the community. I am sending
a clear message to my staff that our support for our officers is of the utmost importance."

Following that fax, we received a statement from the St. Louis Police Officers Association.

It says:

"It is reassuring to the law enforcement community to know the public statements abdicating violence against police officers will not be tolerated. The SLPOA applauds Katz and Clear Channel Communications for making this decision."

Suspect In Police Officer Killing Pleads Not Guilty

A Kirkwood man has pleaded not guilty to the shooting of Kirkwood Police Sgt. William McEntee.

genthumb.ashx

20-year-old Kevin Johnson is accused of shooting and killing McEntee in July. Relatives have said that Johnson may have been upset about the death of his younger brother that same evening, and may have blamed the police for his brother's death.

Police say that on the night he died, McEntee was responding to a fireworks call, and was talking to a 13-year-old male. McEntee was sitting in his car talking to the teen, who was standing outside the driver's side door.

Police say Johnson walked up along the passenger side of the car

and started firing into the car, hitting McEntee and also hitting the 13-year-old boy in the leg.
The teen was not seriously injured.

Witnesses say McEntee's car, which was in gear, sped into a tree. Johnson then allegedly walked up to the car and fired shots at Sgt. McEntee from a close range, then took McEntee's service weapon and left.

Johnson' vehicle, a white Ford Explorer, was later found in a Ferguson apartment complex. Johnson surrendered after a three-day manhunt.

Johnson is charged with murder, assault, robbery and armed criminal action.

Segeant McEntee spent more than 20 years on the Kirkwood police force, and is the first Kirkwood officer killed since 1900 in the line of duty.

Kirkwood police are searching for the person who vandalized a monument honoring an officer killed in the line of duty. Earlier this week someone desecrated the memorial to fallen Officer Bill McEntee.

Officers spotted the vandalism before the paint could permanently damage the monument. It's been cleaned and resealed and is said to be as good as new.

Chief Jack Plummer says, "Firefighters and some officers went out there, literally with toothbrushes and spent several hours cleaning it off."

Police have a description of the suspect and possibly fingerprints left on a paint can at the scene. There's a $1,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the
person responsible.

--------------------------------------

(KSDK) - The Kirkwood Police Department is asking for the public's help to find out who vandalized a memorial to fallen Kirkwood Sgt. Bill McEntee.

The department on Tuesday released an image of a paint can found near the memorial.

One week ago, McEntee's family was on-hand to dedicate the memorial. Several hours later, white paint was poured over the memorial.

Kirkwood firefighters and police officers spent several hours removing the paint from the monument, which has been completely restored to its original condition.

There is a $1,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of those responsible for vandal
izing the memorial.

Kevin Johnson

(KSDK) - The man charged with killing a Kirkwood police officer was charged Monday with two counts of conspiracy to commit first-degree murder.

Kevin Johnson, 21, allegedly solicited an individual to murder two witnesses in his case relating to the murder of Sgt. William McEntee on July 5, 2005, in the Meacham Park neighborhood.

Prosecutors say Johnson provided names, addresses and physical descriptions of the witnesses on a handwritten note to the individual.

Prosecutors say this isn't the first attempt to alter the outcome of the trial. In October, Christopher Ward, 18, and Anthony Davis, 18, both of Kirkwood, were each charged with three counts each of tampering with a witness.
