(KMOV) -- After 8 hours of deliberation, the jury recommended the death penalty for Kevin Johnson for the murder of Kirkwood Police Sergeant Bill McEntee.

Reportedly Johnson showed no emotion as the jury sentenced him to death.

Thursday, those jurors convicted Johnson of first-degree murder. It took the jury just four hours to decide.

Friday morning, the penalty phase of Johnson's trial began.

Kevin Johnson was found guilty of first-degree murder . The difference between a conviction for first-degree murder or second-degree murder is difference between Johnson one day being eligible for parole or possibly receiving the death penalty. The guilty verdict for murder in the first-degree means that Johnson will receive the death penalty or life in prison.

In closing arguments, he told them Johnson used cool deliberation when he shot Sgt. McEntee.

The defense argued that Johnson had a troubled childhood and that he was in a trance on the day of the shooting.

Thursday evening, Sgt. McEntee's family testified.

Friday, some of Johnson's family members took the stand.

The death penalty will officially be imposed in January.

The trial of Kevin Johnson ended when a jury recommended he be executed for murdering a police officer in 2005. But the sentence hasn't brought anything like closure to this St. Louis suburb, where racial tensions surrounding the case still run high.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported Sunday that Johnson's conviction has done nothing to calm the racial tension in Meacham Park, a lower-income and largely black neighborhood within the largely affluent suburb of Kirkwood.

Some who support Johnson reacted angrily to questions about the case, openly insulting the police. Others spoke softly at the door, expressing support for the police and for the death penalty for Johnson but asked that they not be quoted by name.

Interviews with residents show that black and white neighbors still see the situation through very different eyes after Johnson was sentenced Saturday. Some say police in the community are abusive. Others insist police are friendly. Some say Johnson deserves to die, just like his victim Sgt. William McEntee. Others say the killer has suffered too and should be spared.

The strained relations have a long history. Kirkwood annexed Meacham Park in 1992, and the subsequent demolition of many homes there for commercial development produced a backdrop of ill will. The city did invest in street paving and other neighborhood improvements.

When Kevin Johnson killed McEntee in July 2005, it only highlighted underlying tension between many resident's and the city's police force.

St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney Robert McCulloch argued that Johnson, 21, had accused police of not trying hard enough to save his brother and murdered McEntee in revenge.

Johnson's little brother, Joseph "Bam Bam" Long, 12, collapsed fatally in their home about two hours before the killing. An autopsy indicated the boy died of a heart defect.

Johnson admitted during his trial that he shot the officer about two hours late, while in a "trance," distraught over the death earlier that day of his younger brother.

McEntee, 43, a married father of three, was shot at close range through the passenger window of his stopped patrol car while he was investigating reports of fireworks.

Residents and police met after McEntee's killing, hoping to defuse the tension.

Some felt progress was marred in mid-2006, when someone dumped paint on a new granite memorial to McEntee near police headquarters.

Ron Hodges, 54, said the killing divided the neighborhood. But he credited the Kirkwood police for keeping the peace.

"You'd think they would come down pretty good after that, but they didn't," he said. He said the police were in a predicament. Many families want the police to break up loiterers and drug dealers. But when police get aggressive, they are accused of harassment.

Roy Schwer, 55, said he feared some of his neighbors would retaliate against him. Schwer said that as one of the neighborhood's few white homeowners, he was a constant target of racially biased aggression. He said he put up a white lattice to protect his front window after people threw a bottle through it.

"They hate me just for the fact that I breathe," he said.

St. Louis County — Sitting in what had become their usual seats in a Clayton courtroom Friday, family and friends of Kevin Johnson and of the police sergeant he killed heard a judge sentence him to die for the crime.

Spectators took basically the same spots where they sat during a trial in April that ended with a hung jury, a second trial in November that resulted in a first-degree murder conviction, and a hearing last month over alleged juror misconduct.

In a victim impact statement to St. Louis County Circuit Judge Melvyn W. Wiesman, widow Mary McEntee summed up what many people in the courtroom said they felt: "The past two years and six months have been a difficult time for us. We buried Bill, we have gone through two trials and have had no time for grieving, no closure, and it's been so much in the public eye."

As she spoke, a TV camera fed her remarks to news crews in a nearby witness room. Advertisement

Mary McEntee and her husband's sister, Jane McEntee, described how the murder devastated their lives and families.

Jane McEntee said she will never again hear her protective brother's "big booming laugh or his big footsteps walking through the door. â┚¬¦ I will never again see the proud look on his face when his sons score a goal or make a basket or hit a home run."

Defense attorney Karen Kraft asked Wiesman to disregard a jury's Nov. 9 recommendation for a death sentence and instead send Johnson, now 22, to prison for life.

She noted that the killer's half-brother, Joseph "Bam Bam" Long, 12, had died earlier on July 5, 2005, the day McEntee was slain. "The Johnson family also lost a son, and it is about to lose another son, father, brother," Kraft told the court.

Joseph died of a congenital heart condition. Kraft and co-counsel Robert Steele said at both trials that Johnson was distraught over Joseph's death and blamed police on the scene in the Meacham Park neighborhood for doing too little to save him.
