Woman raped inside home; police search for suspect
By:SUSAN ROBERTSON, Staff Writer 12/29/2005

PRINCE GEORGE - Police are searching for the man wanted in connection with an armed robbery and rape that occurred Tuesday night in the Pine Ridge mobile home park off Prince George Drive.

The incident occurred at approximately 10:15 p.m. in the 100 block of Blue Jay Street. "The victim was home with her 10-year-old daughter and her four- and five-year-old children," said Sgt. Brian Kei, spokesman for Prince George County police. The four- and five-year-old children were asleep in a bedroom and the 29-year-old victim and her 10-year-old daughter were in the master bedroom watching television when the subject gained entry through an unlocked door.
"Once the suspect entered the trailer, he displayed a knife and demanded money from the victim," said Kei. "Then he order

ed the 10-year-old into the bedroom closet." He took
$100 from the victim, then ordered [her] to go into the master bathroom where he raped her. He made threats to the victim, saying 'You better not scream, or I'll hurt you and your children.'" "Evidently there was a vehicle that came by the trailer and spooked the suspect, and he fled on foot," said Kei.
The victim was taken to the Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center in Richmond for examination.

"We had a canine come out to do a track, but it was unsuccessful," said Kei.
The suspect is described as a light-skinned African-American male, 6 feet tall with a slim build and weighing approximately 175 pounds. At the time of the crime, he was wearing a baggy black jacket, baggy black pants, dark-colored shoes and a red ski mask with a dark-colored stripe.
"Physical evidence was recovered at the scene and has been submitted to the lab for examination, hopefully to determ
ine
who
this was," said Kei.
Police currently have no suspects in the case. However, a report filed on F
riday sited a suspect with a similar description.
"A citizen that lives in the same trailer park reported that a light-skinned black male with a similar description had walked into her home unannounced and asked to use the phone," said Kei.
Once he is arrested, the suspect could face charges of breaking and entering, rape, and two counts of abduction.
Anyone with information on either of these crimes is encouraged to call police headquarters at 733-2770 or Prince George Crime Solvers at 733-2777.

Entire story fits the infamous East Coast Rapist, tip from Prince George's County led to his capture.
Knowing what nnnf readers know about media, the story died quickly, it was likely crushed by DoJ.
Authorities suspect the East Coast Rapist in at least four sexual assaults in Prince George's County.
However, story below says no rape activity 2001-2006.
I highly doubt that is true.

East Coast Rapist Caught With Local Tip

By Tim Persinko • Published March 7, 2011 • Updated on March 7, 2011 at 8:46 pm

How local authorities were able to bring a 14-year manhunt to a close.

The man suspected of being the East Coast Rapist made his first appearance in court on Monday.

In New Haven, Ct., 39-year-old Aaron Thomas has been charged with rape and assault with a weapon. A judge there set bail at $1.5 million.

"Why haven't you picked me up sooner?" Thomas reportedly said to arresting officers last week, according to the prosecutor at the hearing.

At a press conference in Prince William County, investigators said it was a tip from Prince George's County that led to the suspect's capture. Officers said an anonymous caller provided detailed information about the suspect to the Prince George's County Crime Solvers hotline. Original reports that said the tip came from Prince William County were wrong, investigators said.

Authorities suspect the East Coast Rapist in at least four sexual assaults in Prince George's County.

"We always expected that a tip would lead us to a successful conclusion to this case," said Fairfax County Police Chief Dave Rohrer.

Investigators said the case was so difficult because the incidents took place across such a wide geographical area. They said at one point, more 700 individuals were suspected as potential suspects in the case.

Authorities said they used a data sharing program called LINX to narrow down the suspects to a "short list." Aaron Thomas was part of this list.

In late February, billboards went up across seven states with the mug shot of the suspect and a website was launched with information on the crimes. Police chief Roar said that the website recorded 169,000 page views.

Virginia state prosecutors said Thomas faces five life sentences for crimes of rape in Virginia. Since he also faces charges in Connecticut, he may not be tried in Virginia until that trial concludes.

There is a five year gap in the East Coast Rapist's attacks, between 2001 and 2006. Police said that they are continuing to search for new evidence or victims in the case.

Ronald Hosko, an FBI special agent who had worked on the case, praised the cooperation of Virginia's law enforcement organizations on the case. "It was a good week for agencies involved," he said. "It was a week when the predator became the prey."
The suspect could have been caught years ago if police had been allowed to check for family members who matched the DNA profile that had been developed, authorities said. Most states don't allow the use of familial DNA searches because of privacy concerns.

In certain cases, police submit a DNA profile that does not contain an exact match but appears to indicate a family relationship with someone known to authorities. If police had been allowed to use such searches for the East Coast Rapist, authorities said they would have arrested Thomas years ago because he did have a family member in a police database.

The arrest of Thomas is a highlight in the career of Prince William County Commonwealth's Attorney Paul Ebert. He said that the public's concern over the rapist approached that of the D.C. sniper in 2002, who also targeted Prince William County.

Authorities suspect the East Coast Rapist in at least four sexual assaults in Prince George's County.

Later in March 2013, Thomas was indicted on six counts of first-degree rape and multiple related charges in Prince George's County, Maryland, and, as of March 26, 2013, faced a total of 54 charges in said county.[9]

The man dubbed the East Coast Rapist – already facing life sentences for rapes in two Virginia counties -- pleaded guilty Monday to three first-degree rape charges in Prince George’s County.
Aaron Thomas, 43, of Connecticut is a suspect in rapes from Rhode Island to Virginia over a 20-year span, authorities say. He was indicted in March 2013 on a total of 54 charges in Prince George’s County, including first-degree sex offense, theft, kidnapping and false imprisonment. He is accused of raping and kidnapping six women in the county between February 1997 and August 2001, NBC Washington reports.
Authorities believe he is connected to 17 rapes; 12 of which Thomas has been tied to based on DNA evidence.
Thomas was sentenced in March 2013 to three life terms in prison for raping two Prince William County, VA, teenagers and abducting another, as they were trick-or-treating on Halloween night 2009.
Defense attorney for Thomas argued in the Virginia cases that he suffered from a number of mental disorders and had been abused as a child, so that should pose a mitigating factor.

An expert witness for the defense, who evaluated Thomas, testified that though Thomas clearly had a range of issues, he was legally competent.
The three Virginia girls were attacked as they were walking home from trick-or-treating. They were cutting across a shopping center parking lot when Thomas pulled out a lighter that looked like a gun and asked if they had money, according to court documents.
When the girls said they did not, Thomas ordered them to a wooded area behind the store, and told them to drop their bags full of candy. He then took them to a clearing down a hill, where he told them to lie face down on the ground. He sexually assaulted the two 17-year-old victims, but the 16-year-old was able to text her mother from the scene.
