Alleged Muslim terror leader's tantrum

AN accused terror leader became enraged and began to cry when queried about the validity of his teachings, a court heard yesterday.
The Supreme Court was told Abdul Nacer Benbrika also bemoaned Muslims who refused to stand up for Islamic law during a series of religious classes in 2004.
An undercover agent, known as SIO39, told the jury the classes were attended by other men accused of forming a home-grown terror cell bent on committing violent jihad in Australia.
SIO39 said Majed Raad approached Mr Benbrika in May 2004 after his parents raised concerns that the spiritual leader's teachings did not accord with their beliefs.
SIO39 said Mr Benbrika became angry and upset when he looked over a book said to back another philosophy.
"He was yelling, he was enraged, he even began to cry at one point," he said.
The court heard Mr Benbrika criticised the book until Mr Raad agreed his parents were wrong and said he would burn the book.
SIO39 said two months later Mr Benbrika "bemoaned those Muslims content to remain idle" and negate their obligations under Islamic law. He said Mr Benbrika then turned the topic to jihad.
"He wondered how Muslims could sit still while their brothers and sisters were being killed overseas," SIO39 told the jury.
The agent said at a class in September that alleged group member Fadl Sayadi said men in Chechnya who took children hostage at a school could not be criticised if they were acting for the good of Islam.
SIO39 said Mr Sayadi told others present Allah would "prefer anything than seeing a single drop of Muslim blood spilt".
Those who have pleaded not guilty to being a member of a terror group are: Mr Benbrika, 48, of Dallas; Abdullah Merhi, 22, of Fawkner; Shane Kent, 31, of Meadow Heights; Majed Raad, 23, of Coburg; Aimen Joud, 23, of Hoppers Crossing; Ahmed Raad, 24, of Fawkner; Mr Sayadi, 28, of Coburg; Ezzit Raad, 26, of Preston; Hany Taha, 33, of Hadfield; Shoue Hammoud, 28, of Hadfield; Bassam Raad, 26, of Brunswick; and Amer Haddara, 28, of Yarraville.
The trial before Justice Bernard Bongiorno continues.
