Popeyes robbery suspects arrested

Two people, including a Popeyes Chicken and Biscuits employee, were arrested Monday and charged in connection with last week's robbery and sexual assault at the Jackson restaurant, police said.

Jerry Gibson, 23, of 2840 Robinson Road, Apt. 409, in Jackson, an employee of the Popeyes on Terry Road, was arrested Monday night on an armed robbery charge, Deputy Chief Lee Vance of the Jackson Police Department said.

Howard Helm, 20,
f 1023 Warren St., Jackson, was being held without bond at the Hinds County Detention Center on charges of armed robbery and two counts of sexual battery, Vance said. Police were searching for a third suspec

t,
Vance said.

Police would not say specifically what led to Monday's arrests. "Good pol
ice work," Police Chief Robert Moore said.

Gibson was among the five employees working when the restaurant was robbed shortly before 10 p.m. on Feb. 25.

The robbers forced two women employees to disrobe, while a third female employee was forced to partially disrobe. Two of the women were then sexually assaulted, police said.

One of the robbers used a digital camera on his cell phone to take photographs of the sexual assault, police said.

Police recovered a cell phone with a digital camera when Helm was arrested at his home on Monday afternoon, Vance said.

"We don't know if it's the cell phone that was used during the robbery," V
ance said.

Popeyes employees would not comment on Monday's arrest.

The incident at the Popeyes is similar to a New Year's Eve robbery at Christina's Hair Design, 4820 Watki

br>In that case, two armed men robbed the store and one of the robbers sexually assaulted a woman, police said.

No arrests have been made.

V
ance said detectives have no evidence connecting the two cases.

Police said Mitchell Harris, 24, of Jackson, was a suspect in that case, but he has not been charged.

Harris was arrested on a murder charge on Feb. 1 and is being held at the Hinds County Detention Center without bond.
