An anti-Semitic slur was sprawled across a San Bruno church this week, setting police off in a hunt to solve the city's first hate crime in recent memory.

The phrase was written in black marker across the garage door of the Church of the Highlands Monday. What's perplexing is that the religious slur was spread across a non-denominational Christian church.

Right now, it's an isolated incident, said San Bruno police Capt. Neil Telford. But we're taking this very seriously.

There is no indication that any specific individual was being targeted, Telford said.

When police process a hate crime, Telford said a copy of the police report is forwarded to the Federal Bureau of Inves
igations. The crime is tracked on a state and national level. If the perpetrator is arrested, Telford said it will be up to the District Attorney's Office to decide what punishment will be pursued.

J

udging from the na
ture of the writing, Telford said police think the suspects could be in high school or around that age.

Telford declined to comment on what type of evidence was collected at the scene. Police are still following up on leads in the investigation. To ensure the investigation is not jeopardized, Telford said the police are not revealing what steps they're taking to track down any potential suspects.

Obviously, we'd like to solve this, but it's still too early to tell, Telford said.

Representatives from the Church of Highlands could not be reached for comment.
