Former Michigan State University basketball star Keith Appling will face a murder charge in connection with the fatal :guns: of his relative last month, prosecutors say.
Wayne County (Michigan) Prosecutor Kym Worthy announced Monday that her office is pursuing the following charges against Appling, 29: one count of first-degree murder, one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm, and two counts of felony firearm. He has not yet been formally charged through a court arraignment, though a date for that is being arranged.
Appling was arrested May 24 by Michigan State Police in Chelsea.
Appling and the victim — Clyde Edmonds, 66, also of Detroit — are related. Edmond's wife is the first cousin of Appling’s mother, the prosecutor revealed in a news release.
The shooting was reported and Detroit police were dispatched about 7:10 p.m. May 22 to the 13240 block of Whitcomb Street in Detroit.

At the scene, police found the victim on the front lawn of the residence with multiple gunshot wounds, according to the prosecutor's office. Medics transported Edmonds to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Appling's 28-year-old girlfriend will also be charged in connection with the case — with one count of accessory after the fact and one count of lying to a police officer, according to the release. Appling is accused of having an argument with Edmonds over a handgun, fatally shooting the victim multiple times and fleeing the scene.
Separately, Appling is also charged with assault with intent to do bodily harm less than murder and felony firearm out of Jackson County (Michigan) for an incident reported May 2, Jackson County's 12th District Court records show. He awaits a preliminary examination in that case.
The former basketball player spent four years at MSU and was named Michigan Mr. Basketball in 2010. He was MSU's leading scorer his junior season, had a few stints in the NBA G League, spent some time with the Orlando Magic in 2016 and last played professionally in Italy in 2019.
Appling previously was sentenced to 18 months of probation after being found with 19 grams of heroin in his car in Warren last December.
He also spent a year in jail for carrying a concealed weapon and resisting and obstructing a police officer in Wayne County in 2017.
Dates and times of the Detroit arraignments are yet to be confirmed and announced for either Appling or his girlfriend.
