A Navy sailor is accused of fatally shooting a California man and fellow sailor that he caught having a sexual affair with his wife at the couple's Virginia home last week, police said.
Tyler Lamar Jenkins, 26, was arrested on suspicion of murder after he allegedly confessed to firing several rounds at Timothy Paul Talley III and killing him, according to the Virginia Beach Police Department.
Jenkins was charged with second-degree murder, attempted malicious wounding and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony in the March 11 incident, according to an arrest warrant obtained by Oxygen.com.
Police were dispatched to a home in the 4800 block of Crystalline Place after Jenkins’ wife called 911 to report shots had been fired inside the home. Upon arrival, authorities found Talley dead on the ground. He was pronounced dead at the scene by medical personnel.
Jenkins, who was taken into custody without incident, allegedly told detectives he’d fired three rounds in total at Talley.
“I didn’t report it so I’m being arrested, someone f--king in my house, what am I doing wrong?” Jenkins asked investigators, per the police report. “Did y’all get the gun? That I shot him with?”
The man’s wife told police she was “engaged in a sexual act” with Talley when her husband entered the room and began firing at her and Talley, according to charging documents. The woman told law enforcement she’d feared for her life.
Authorities described the incident as a domestic-related shooting. Local police declined to release additional information regarding the open case this week.
“The office is prohibited from commenting on pending cases,” Melissa Johnston, a public affairs officer for the Virginia Police Department told Oxygen.com on Wednesday.
Jenkins is a sailor in the U.S. Navy, a military spokesperson confirmed on Wednesday. Talley was also a Navy serviceman, the spokesperson said.
“We are aware that a service member was arrested in connection with the death of another service member following an altercation that occurred at an off-base residence,” the U.S. Navy said in a statement sent to Oxygen.com. “We are cooperating with the Virginia Beach police department in their investigation into this tragic incident and we extend our deepest sympathy to the family and friends of the victim.”
Jenkins, who served in the Navy since 2014, according to a bail detention document, is an air traffic controller. He was stationed at Fleet Area Control and Surveillance Facility on the Naval Air Station Oceana in Virginia Beach.
He was arraigned in court on Monday, according to the Virginian-Pilot.
Jenkins is scheduled back in court on May 12. He’s currently being held without bail, pending his upcoming court date. The 26-year-old has a prior criminal record stemming from a 2016 assault charge, charging documents also show.
Eric Leckie, Jenkins’ defense attorney, wasn’t immediately available for comment when contacted by Oxygen.com on Wednesday afternoon. Jenkins had been denied a public defender due to his annual income from the Navy.
