COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — Three teens have been arrested and charged with the murder of a 53-year-old man, Columbus police said Wednesday.

The incident happened around 7 p.m. Dec. 6 inside a business in the 3600 block of South High Street. Columbus police said 18-year-old Dionta Davon Hughes, 19-year-old Jamarion Fredrae Evans-Bennett, and a 17-year-old male, all got into an altercation with patrons inside the business. Security staff asked all three to leave as a result.

Outside, Columbus police said a fight began between the three teens and 53-year-old Donald Smith Jr. The suspects then drove away in a red car, and Smith was taken to a local hospital in critical condition. He later died from his injuries on Monday.

On Wednesday, officers arrested Hughes, Evans-Bennett and the 17-year-old, and all three were charged with murder. No court proceedings had been scheduled for Hughes or Evans-Bennett as of Wednesday, according to Franklin County Municipal Court records.
NBC4 does not name juvenile suspects unless police are actively looking for them, or they have been charged as an adult.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — A Franklin County judge set bond at $1 million each for two men charged with murder in the beating death of a man outside of a Kroger grocery store last month.

Dionta Hughes, 18, and Jamarion Evans-Bennett, 19, appeared before the judge on Wednesday.
The two men and 17-year-old Jayden Agee are accused of killing 53-year-old Donald Smith Jr. on Dec. 6 outside of the Kroger located at 3637 South High St.

According to Columbus police, the three teenagers were involved in an altercation with other individuals inside the store and security asked them to leave the store.

Court documents say the teens waited outside of the store and then assaulted Smith, knocking him to the ground. In court, prosecutors said the suspects continued to beat Smith while he was unconscious.

“Witnesses claim that they said you guys know those guys just assaulted an individual and beat the crap out of him. There was more snickering and laughing at that time,” the Franklin County prosecuting attorney told the judge in court.

Hughes and Evans-Bennett pleaded not guilty.

Police in Ohio have charged three teenagers over the death of a father-of-three, after they allegedly laughed as they kicked him over and over outside a supermarket, giving him injuries that would later kill him.
Dionta Hughes, 18, Jamarion Evans-Bennett, 19, and Jayden Agee, 17, all faced murder charges in relation to Donnie Smith's death on Dec. 18, according to officials with the Columbus Police Department.
Two weeks before, on Dec. 6, the 53-year-old father was allegedly assaulted at a Kroger supermarket by the trio, who were waiting outside for him after security asked them to leave.

A witness told police that the group were "laughing and enjoying themselves" as they beat Smith. He was left unconscious and bleeding from the head, later succumbing to his injuries.
"Donnie was an amazing person," Nicole Evans, Smith's partner of 20 years, told ABC 6 News. "He was a great father, he loved his kids, they were his world."

She said the group had simply grabbed Smith and beaten him to death in a "random act of violence."
The 17-year-old appeared in court Friday, Dec. 22, with the next court date set for Jan. 16. He could be tried in an adult court, due to the severity of the charges.
