Deputies said Adger Armstrong, 47, and an accomplice, Wanda Humphries, were arrested last month after a series of snatch and grab thefts at Houston department stores, including Nordstrom.
"Well, they simply grabbed th
e merchandise and ran to a waiting car and took off," said Julian Ramirez, a Harris County prosecutor.
Armstrong offered t
o lead police to the man he said was buying the stolen merchandise, which was Harris County Precinct 1 deputy constable John Lee, according to prosecutors.
Nordstrom, which lost more than $3,000 in one of the thefts, offered to help in the sting by supplying merchandise.
Armstrong called Lee and offered to sell the Nordstrom merchandise, officials said, and police were waiting at a restaurant when the men met to exchange the clothing. Lee ran when officers tried to arrest him, according to authorities.
"Police in marked units and unmarked units had to chase him approximately 400 yards in traffic before he pulled over," Ramirez said.
Police found the stolen clothing in Lee's truck, as well as other stolen items, officials said.
Lee was fired after he was charged with receiving stolen merchandise and evading arrest. He ref
erre
d Local 2 to his attorney, who declined to comment on the case.
"You give someone the opportunity to commit a crime and they commit the crime, that's a crime
," Ramirez said.
Lee faces up to one year in jail and $20,000 in fines on the felonies, if he is convicted. Lee is a longtime officer, having served 26 years as a trooper for the Texas Department of Public Safety. He also worked for Harris County Precinct 7 Constable's Office.
Armstrong was a running back in the 80s for the Oilers and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
