[
quote]Indianapolis - Older women are being targeted for crime, and police are looking for more suspects.

One woman is under arrest and police want to talk to several more women in connection with the strong-armed robberies. Police say the suspects are staking out handicapped parking spaces looking for defenseless victims.

"Not until she got my purse - then I knew they meant business," said Mary. She is one of several victims in their seventies and eighties who were followed home and robbed after trips to the store.

Mary's leg was injured after the suspects who snatched her purse ran over it in a car. It happened on March 20th as she left the East Washington Street Aldi grocery store. Doctors are amazed the car didn't break her bones.

Detectives want to talk to Ciara Duncan, Porta Harris, Shakkia Cunningham and Ashaawntee Potts about the attacks. Laritha Martin, 25, is already in custody. Police have arrest
warrants for 24-year-old Ashley Spraddling too.

Police say one victim suffered a heart attack after being robbed.

Police believe the younger women targeted elderly women parked in handicapped spaces. In some cases, the suspects even followed their victims home.

Both Spraddling and Martin were arrested and convicted of committing a strong-armed robbery together in 2007 of a 75-year-old woman.

Police say Martin confessed to following and robbing 71-year-old Sharon from the grocery store. Martin reportedly approached Sharon outside her garage asking for directions.

"She spun around, pushed her way in, grabbed the purse and pushed her way back out," said Sharon, another victim.

"It's pretty ruthless. They are going after people who can not defend themselves," said Lt. Jim Roehrig, IMPD.

"We would appreciate the public's help in finding the suspects," said Commander Becky Lake, IMPD.

D
etective Austin Black has also linked the six younger women to other crimes with older victims like Sharon and Mary.

"They are all 19, 20 to 24 years of age," said Black.

Police say they believe there may be more victims. They have several purses recovered during the investigation that have not been claimed.[/quote]

Ashley Spraddling

Indianapolis - All of the suspects in a recent string of attacks on older women are now in custody. Police picked up one of their robbery suspects at a funeral home Tuesday night.

Police arrested Ashley Spraddling Tuesday night. She had been on the run. Investigators say Laritha Martin already confessed to three strong-armed robberies.

Police say the suspects watched handicapped parking spaces for possible victims like Mary. She was at the Aldi store on East Washington Street on March 20th. She says the suspects snatched her purse and t
hen ran over her with a car, injuring her leg. Mary, who did not wish to give her last name, said she didn't see anyone approaching until the suspect grabbed her purse.

Another victim suffered a heart attack after getting robbed.

Detectives have also arrested Ciara Duncan, Porta Harris, Shakkia Cunningham and Ashaawntee Potts in connection with the attacks.

Investigators say Laritha Martin, 25, confessed to their crime spree. They reportedly scouted handicapped parking spaces for victims and sometimes followed them home.

Police suspect they attacked an 83-year-old in her Burbank Road driveway. The caller told the dispatch operator that the attackers tore the straps off the woman's handbag, and pushed her down.

Crime Prevention Expert Shirley Purvitis says there's a common denominator that makes older people vulnerable to attacks.

"Being out alone or jeopardizing their safety because they are lonely," said P
urvitis.

On Sunday, Ashley Spraddling called paramedics to her North Carollton Avenue home about her four-month-old not breathing. The baby girl did not survive. Eventually she showed up at a funeral home to inquire about her daughter's remains.

Anticipating funeral plans, police secretly watched Spraddling visit a local funeral home.

"They went inside and apprehended her on two different warrants for robbery and fraud," said Sgt. Matthew Mount, IMPD.

In addition to Spraddling's arrest, police are also questioning four other women.

Laritha Martin

Indianapolis - An alleged robbery suspect is now charged with stealing a purse from an 81-year-old woman.

The victim identified Laritha Martin in a photo line-up, saying Martin grabbed her purse in April after asking for directions. The purse contained credit cards and $400 in cash.

According to court records, Martin admitted stealing the purse to pay the court cost for a prior robbery conviction.
