Graffiti Might Be Hate Crime

From a Times Staff Writer

Sheriff's detectives were investigating as a possible hate crime the vandalism of cars and the spray-painting of walls in a Lancaster neighborhood early Saturday, authorities said.

The fluorescent pink graffiti, which included a swastika and the letters KKK, were reported by a resident in the 1700 block of Linda Avenue just before 6 a.m., said Los Angeles County Sheriff's Lt. Wallace Fullerton. In addition, seven cars were scrawled with spray paint, he said.

Several hours later, residents about a block away reported nearly identical graffiti, Fullerton said.

The initial graffiti were found in a
racially mixed middle-income neighborhood, and it was unclear whether any residents were specifically targeted, Fullerton said. The later vandalism occurred in a predominantly white neighborhood, he said.<b

Police had only a vague description of a white m
