MOORESTOWN, N.J. (CBS) — Eagles quarterback Michael Vick is cancelling his book tour because of death threats against him.

Vick was supposed to sign his autobiography “Finally Free,” at various Barnes and Noble stores in Pennsylvania, Atlanta and New Jersey.

One event was scheduled at the Moorestown, New Jersey location for March 23rd, but the event now reads “Canceled by Publisher” on its website.

In a phone interview, Vick’s spokesman Chris Shigas, said, “there’s been a recent uptick in some of the violent threats through social media, but also credible threats of violence that were phoned into bookstores, threatening Michael Vick, threatening his family, threatening the bookstore’s property, and threatening bookstore employees.”

Shigas said the nature of the threats revolve around the crimes Vick committed.

Before signing with the Eagles in 2009, Vick served 18 months in federal prison for his role in a dog fighting operation.

Vick has tried to repair his image. He’s partnered with The Humane Society to lead an anti-dog fighting campaign.

“Unfortunately some of the behavior is inappropriate and unacceptable. What we have now are a few extremists, who I don’t think represent the animal welfare community,” said Shigas.

Former Philadelphia Eagle Michael Vick to Lobby For Law to Protect Animals in Hot Cars

Michael Vick is heading to the Pennsylvania statehouse to lobby legislators on a bill that would help protect pets left in hot cars.

Vick was a star quarterback for the NFL's Atlanta Falcons when he pleaded guilty in 2007 to being part of a dogfighting ring and ended up serving 21 months in prison.

He's now a backup quarterback for the Pittsburgh Steelers.

A Vick spokesman says he plans to meet with Democratic lawmakers Tuesday about legislation nicknamed the "Pets in Cars" bill. It would allow first responders to break into cars to rescue dogs or cats in distress without fear of being held liable for damages.

Since his 2009 release from prison, Vick has worked on a number of animal rights issues.

Over 400,000 People Sign Petition Demanding NFL Remove Former Eagles QB Michael Vick As Honorary Pro Bowl Captain
December 8, 2019 at 1:39 pm

PHILADELPHIA (CNN) — Michael Vick is going back to the NFL Pro Bowl, this time as one of four NFL Legends Pro Bowl Captains. But if some fans have their way, the ex-quarterback will lose his chance to mentor players and be on the sidelines during the game.

A woman started a petition on change.org calling for the NFL to take back the honor and it has more than 400,000 signatures.

“Just saw this on Facebook and was absolutely disgusted,” she wrote on the petition page, referring to a social media post about Vick’s inclusion. “When is the NFL going to take any responsibility for the behavior of it’s current and former players? To honor a man who had zero regard for animals is unacceptable and I would like your help to make sure he is not honored at the 2020 NFL Pro Bowl.”

Vick served 18 months in federal prison after admitting in 2007 that he participated in killing dogs and operated a business enterprise that involved illegal gambling. He was suspended by the NFL and filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

In 2009, Vick returned to the NFL and played for the Philadelphia Eagles, New York Jets and Pittsburgh Steelers before retiring in 2017. He then signed with Fox Sports as an analyst.

The NFL, Fox Sports and representatives for Vick did not immediately respond to a request for comment from CNN.

The 2020 NFL Pro Bowl will take place on January 26 at Camping World Stadium in Orlando. The other captains selected are Terrell Davis, Darrell Green and Bruce Smith. They are expected to serve as mentors to players during the game and participate in events leading up to it.

Former Eagles QB Michael Vick To Serve As Honorary Pro Bowl Captain Despite Petition Calling For Removal
December 12, 2019 at 2:46 pm

PHILADELPHIA (CBS/CNN) — Despite a petition calling for his removal, former Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Michael Vick will serve as the NFL’s honorary Pro Bowl captain this year, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said. More than 560,000 people signed a Change.org petition to bar Vick from serving as a captain, a role that would see him mentor players and coach from the sidelines.

But Goodell said Vick’s made progress since his 2007 conviction for illegal dog fighting.

“Over the last, what is it, nine years or so, we have supported Michael in his recognition of the mistake he made,” he said at a press conference. “He’s paid a heavy price for that. He’s been accountable for it.”

Goodell said Vick has worked to secure animal rights since his release from prison. In 2015, he met with lawmakers in Pennsylvania to support a bill that gave police officers the right to break into cars to free dogs and cats.

The year before, he supported a bill later signed into law that made it illegal to attend an organized animal fight, the Washington Post reported.

“I know there are people out there who will never forgive him,” he said. “He knows that. But I think this is a young man who’s really taken his life in a positive direction, and we support that, so I don’t anticipate any change, no.”

Joanna Lind started the petition on Change.org.

“Just saw this on Facebook and was absolutely disgusted. When is the NFL going to take any responsibility for the behavior of it’s current and former players? To honor a man who had zero regard for animals is unacceptable and I would like your help to make sure he is NOT honored at the 2020 NFL Pro Bowl,” she wrote.

Vick served 18 months in federal prison after admitting in 2007 that he participated in illegal dog fighting, killing dogs and operating a business enterprise that involved illegal gambling.

He was suspended indefinitely from the NFL until the Eagles signed him in 2009 and named him starting quarterback. His six-year, $100 million contract with the team made him one of the league’s highest-paid players.

He retired from football in 2017.

Vick will serve alongside co-captains Terrell Davis, Darrell Green and Bruce Smith at the 2020 Pro Bowl on January 26. They’ll take the field with current players voted in by fans at Camping World Stadium in Orlando, Florida.
