Feds Indict Former City Officials On Extortion, Mail, Wire Fraud

HOUSTON -- The former head of Houston's Building Services Department was hauled off in handcuffs Tuesday after a bribery bust.

Monique McGilbra has been indicted on four counts of extortion and nine counts of mail and wire fraud after a three-year federal investigation found she had allegedly accepted
extravagant gifts in exchange for helping a Cleveland businessman win city contracts.
McGilbra accepted a $4,500 Super Bowl trip to New Orleans and a $70
0 Louis Vuitton purse, according to investigators.
U.S. Attorney Southern District of Texas Michael Shelby said the behavior is unacceptable.
"This indictment is just another example of this office's rich history of doing battle against this type of crime," Shelby said.
Oliver Spellman, the former chief of staff for former Mayor Lee Brown, was also included in the bribery investigation. He has already pleaded guilty.
If convicted, McGilbra could face up to 20 years in prison for each of the four extortion charges against her. She also faces up to five years in prison for each of the nine counts of mail and wire fraud.
