When I see these I'm always skeptical about the ostensible reasons for arrest. I'm betting he went too far somehow and is being handed over to the US as an example to others. Probably encroached on some bigger J*w's turf... cut into the profits of someone more powerful than himself. Betting he seriously pissed off some J*ws that had more influence in israeli government than himself. If "Israel" was going to extradite all the jewish mob figures who are known to be involved with the Ecstasy trade in the US, there'd be boatloads of them sent to us.

Zeev Rosenstein

TEL AVIV, Israel -- Police arrested a reputed Israeli underworld figure Monday on an international warrant for smuggling drugs from the European Union to the United States, authorities said.

Zeev Rosenstein was arrested after an investigation that spanned three years and several countries. He is believed to be a dominant force on the world Ecstasy market, said David Tzur the Tel Aviv police commander.

Rosenstein's warrant called for his extradition to the United States, a process that could take several months. Federal documents released in Miami on Monday accused Rosenstein of trying to export 700,000 Ecstasy tablets to New York.

"I imagine he will sit behind bars for many years and we are very happy to have him do so in America," Tzur said. "The main thing is that he will be in prison."

Rosenstein's arrest followed a joint investigation conducted by Israeli authorities and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency, authorities said.

The investigation began in 2001 after U.S. law enforcement officials questioned two men arrested in New York with 700,000 Ecstasy tablets, said Danny Avimeir, an Israeli police commander. The investigation also included arrests in Bulgaria and Spain.

Rosenstein's lawyer, Benny Nahiri, said he was unaware police were conducting a drug investigation against his client.

"I was very surprised by this charge," he said. "I am hopeful it will be disproved."

Rosenstein, 50, has long been accused of being one of Israel's top mob leaders, but aside from a brief stint in prison for armed robbery in the 1970s, he had eluded authorities.

In December, a bomb attack targeted Rosenstein - the seventh attempt on his life - leaving him with scratches but killing three passers-by and wounding 18 others in Tel Aviv. The attack was believed to have been ordered by rival mob bosses, police said.

Before that attack, Rosenstein had been questioned by police after a hit man reportedly claimed Rosenstein had ordered hits on some of his rivals. Police later said the accuser was lying and released Rosenstein.

Justice Minister Tzipi Livni on Sunday evening gave the final green light for the extradition to the United States of the suspected underworld kingpin Zeev Rosenstein who is wanted for suspected drug trafficking.

Following Livni's okay, Rosenstein will be flown to the U.S. within a week.

The move comes less than a week after the Supreme Court rejected Rosenstein?s petition against his extradition, ruling that the U.S. has the "natural right to protect itself against those from overseas seeking to harm it."

Livni will, nevertheless, allow Rosenstein's attorneys the right to appeal against her decision, on condition that they present new arguments, before she signs the extradition order.

Justices Edmond Levy, Mishael Cheshin and Elyakim Rubinstein ruled that Rosenstein's actions had primarily hurt citizens and residents of the U.S. "The United States is the country that was hurt by the evil acts that were committed... and how just and right it is, that it should be the United States that judges him and sentences him," the justices said in their ruling.

"Israel - like the world's other nations - is forced to confront a new criminal reality in which crime has become more organized, more international and more widespread than ever before," the justices wrote. "The most obvious are international drug crimes in which, to our great regret, Israeli criminals are taking a central role. This reality requires the joint efforts of nations and tight international cooperation, of which extradition is a key tool."

Israeli police, acting on an international arrest warrant, arrested Rosenstein a year ago for allegedly smuggling drugs from the European Union to the U.S., including an attempt to export 700,000 Ecstasy tablets to New York.

The investigation leading to Rosenstein's arrest spanned three years and several countries.

Rosenstein, 51, has long been accused of being one of Israel's top crime bosses, but aside from a brief stint in prison for armed robbery in the 1970s, he had eluded authorities.

In December 2003, a bomb attack targeted Rosenstein - the seventh attempt on his life - leaving him with scratches while killing three passers-by and wounding 18 others in Tel Aviv. The attack was believed to have been ordered by rival mob bosses, police said.

An Israeli man suspected of helping distribute more than one million pills of Ecstasy in the United States has been extradited to Miami to face charges that could land him more than 20 years in prison.

A reputed Israeli mob boss, described by U.S. prosecutors as one of the world's most wanted drug traffickers, was extradited to the United States on Monday, police said.

Zeev Rosenstein, suspected of involvement in distributing more than one million Ecstasy pills in the United States, mostly in New York and Miami, was handed over to U.S. marshals at Ben Gurion International Airport near Tel Aviv airport and taken aboard a direct El Al flight to Miami, where he will face the drug charges, police spokesman Mickey Rosenfeld said.

A U.S. extradition request, submitted in December 2004, said Rosenstein was involved in distributing more than one million pills of Ecstasy, court documents said.

In November, Israel's Supreme Court ruled he could be extradited, a decision later endorsed by the Israeli justice minister.
In one shipment, Rosenstein allegedly planned distribution of 700,000 Ecstasy pills that were seized in a Manhattan apartment along with $187,000 in July 2001, according to the extradition request. The drugs, which originated in Europe, were seized after they were offered for sale to an undercover Miami-Dade County police informant. The informant also worked for the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration.

Rosenstein, 51, has long been accused of being one of Israel's top mob leaders, but aside from a five-year stint in prison for armed robbery in the 1970s, he had eluded authorities.[/b]
