Mosque worker grooming young girls for sex
Cops: Ex-Mosque Worker Inappropriately Touched Girls
Suffolk police arrested a former groundskeeper at a Brentwood mosque early Wednesday morning for allegedly committing inappropriate acts against two teenagers within the last two months.
Two girls, ages 15 and 16, came to the Third Precinct in Bay Shore on Tuesday to report that 70-year-old Syed Ali Naqvi had them watch pornography with him, bought them gifts and inappropriately touched them between November and December 2009 at the the Islamic Center of Suffolk County on 3rd Street, police said.
The teens, who are and not of Muslim faith, said that they had met Naqvi in September in front of the mosque while walking home from Brentwood High School. He often gave them cash and took them on shopping sprees at the South Shore Mall, where he paid for an iPod, laptop computer and paid for food and manicures, among other things, police said.
“We don’t believe there were any other victims,”� said Detective Sgt. William Rand of the 3rd Squad, who added that Naqvi paid for at least three other girls as well. He added that the teens came forward after a teacher overheard them talking about the alleged abuse and passed the information to the school principal.
The 16-year-old alleged victim reported that Naqvi showed her a pornographic video and touched her inappropriately sometime in November, police said.
The 15-year-old alleged victim reported that on another day in November, Naqvi asked that she watch a pornographic video and tried to hug her and on a seperate occasion, Naqvi slapped and choked the girl, police said. Rand said Naqvi was angered when the girl called a boy to meet her at the mosque.
Rand said that mosque leaders reported Nadvi no longer worked there as of Dec. 25.
Naqvi was charged with forcible touching and two counts of endangering the welfare of a child. He was arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip on Wednesday.
Bail was set at $25,000 cash or $5,000 bond.
