Owner arrested, another man wanted after investigation into burned dog in West Haven

A month after a dog was found burned in a West Haven beach parking lot on the Fourth of July, police have arrested the dog’s owner and are searching for another man believed to be connected to the dog’s death.
Latrice Moody, 35, was arrested at her West Haven home on Monday and charged with animal cruelty, illegal dumping, open burning and second-degree breach of peace, according to West Haven police.
A second arrest warrant was issued for Maurice Jackson, 41, also of West Haven, but he had not been located by mid-afternoon Monday, Sgt. Patrick Buturla said.
Jackson also faces illegal dumping, open burning and second-degree breach of peace charges, per the signed arrest warrant, Buturla said.
“At this time, Maurice Jackson has not been located,” he said. “Jackson is currently on parole for a previous conviction.”
Police responded to the Sandy Point Beach parking lot at about 10 a.m. July 4 for a report of a fire, and when the flames were out they found the remains of a dog. Detectives called it a “heinous act” at the time.
Detectives believe the dog, “an older terrier breed,” was dead before it was set on fire but they have released few additional details about the incident. Police declined to release either arrest warrant for Moody or Jackson.
Moody was held on bail Monday, Buturla said.
