CHICAGO -- A West Side man accused of the beating death of his 2-year-old daughter was scheduled to appear for a bond hearing Tuesday.
Rayonous Burnett, 24, was charged Monday with first-degree murder in the death of his daughter, Shyania Crittle, police News Affairs Officer John Mirabelli said.
Someone called for an ambulance around 12:30 p.m. Saturday from the home of Shyania's grandparents, police News Affairs Officer Amina Greer said. She did not know who made the call.
Shyania was taken by ambulance to Advocate Bethany Hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 2 p.m. that day, Greer said.
During the investigation, Burnett admitted to police that he hit the g
irl, Greer said. It was unclear from the initial police reports where the alleged abuse h
appened, she added. She had no information about Shyania's mother.
The Illinois Department of Children and Family Services was continuing their investigation of Burnett, who had four other children living in his home, according to agency spokeswoman Diane Jackson.
The agency began its investigation on Saturday when someone made an anonymous call to the DCFS hot line and reported a possible death by child abuse, she said.
The agency removed four children from Burnett's home, a 1-month-old boy, a 5-year-old boy, a 2-year-old girl and a 4-year-old girl, Jackson said. She declined to say where they were taken in temporary protective custody, citing security concerns.
DCFS had no prior contact with the Burnett household, Jackson said. She did not know Burnett's relation to the four children.
