Alton Man Convicted Of Killing 2-Year-Old Girl
A jury took 22-minutes to return with a guilty verdict against an Alton man standing trial for the beating death of a 2-year-old girl.
23-year-old Michael Green was charged with first degree murder in the March 2004 beating death of 2-year-old Zariah Harrison.
Green will be sentenced at a later hearing, probably within the next 4 months. The maximum penalty he faces is 60 years in prison.
Prosecutors say Green severely beat the child, who was taken to an Alton Hospital and immediately transported to a St Louis Hospital where the little girl died two days later.
Autopsy results showed the child had severe brain damage from head trauma, a lacerated liver and a
bdominal bleeding.
A co-defendant in the crime is the victim's mother. 25-year-old Sharina
Smallwood pleaded guilty earlier this year to a reduced charge of aggravated battery of a child and was ordered to serve a 10-year prison term.

burns and bruises over most of her body. In January, the girl's mother--Sharina Smallwood--pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of aggravated battery in the child's death. She was sentenced to ten years in prison.
