Sumter County: Man Has History of Child Abuse
(Rembert) - Sumter County authorities say 29-year-old Brent Hill of Wedgefield has been charged with child abuse after he severely burned his girlfriend's 3-year-old son with hot water.
They say it's not the first time he's seen a charge of this kind.
Brent Hill served prison time a few years back in Virginia for abusing a child there.
A Sumter County investigator couldn't give News19 many details on that case saying she has her hands full with this latest one.
"t is pretty bad and it's the worse I've seen, say
s Investigator Melissa Bradley.
She says she's seen a lot of cases, but none like this. "It was pretty rough to watch. An
ytime you have anything that happens to another human being, it's hard to watch, particularly when it's a child, so it makes it even more heinous and difficult."
Bradley says Hill told investigators he was attempting to clean the boy up after he wet himself and didn't mean for the water to be so hot.
"Based on the investigation, we received information that he had given the child a bath and of course had subsequently had cause those injuries to him during the bath. The child was flown to the Augusta, Georgia Burn Center," says Bradley.
Now the child is recovering, Hill is in jail, and his girlfriend is looking for answers.
Bradley says, "I got the opportunity to speak with her and she's obviously pretty shaken up and upset about the whole situation."
She says the little boy is in stabl
e bu
t serious condition.
At the time of the incident, the 3-year-old's mother was not there. Authorities are not planning on charging her but the Department of Social Services has been called
to investigate the home.
A judge has set bond at $35,000 for Hill. He's currently being held in the Sumter County jail.
