Brinkley Middle School Student Injured in Fight

A Brinkley Middle School student is recovering from an injury that came from an altercation with a classmate.

Jackson Public School officials say the fight started between two female students around eight a.m. as they were leaving the auditorium for their regular classes.

J.P.S. Middle School Aassistant Superintendent Randy Bernamonti says the victim is a 13 year old sixth grader.

Officials say she was cut on the lower leg by a 14 year old seventh grader.

WLBT was told a knife was used in the incident.

Bernamonti said, "One pulled a sharp type instrument that resulted in the other stude
nt being cut. It was a minor injury. The child was transported to U.M.C. for treatment."


The injured student was treated and released.

Bernamonti tells WLBT that random metal detector checks had been conducted but in another area of the school.

The seventh grade student was taken to the Hinds County Youth Detention Center.

The incident remains under investigation.

A female Brinkley Middle School student was treated and released at a local hospital for a lower-leg injury Wednesday after a female classmate cut her with a knife, school officials said.

Regina Reynolds, 13, allegedly cut Georgia Spells early Wednesday in a hallway at the northwest Jackson school, according to a preliminary report.

Regina was taken to the Henley-Young Youth Detention Center, school officials said. Booking officers at the detention center said they could not release information on whether Reynolds was still being held because of her age.

She faces expulsion from school. Jackson Pol
ice Department spokesman Robert Graham was unsure whether the girl
had been charged with a crime.

Tammy Reynolds, Regina's mother, described the situation as "bullying gone too far." Reynolds said her daughter was being harassed by Spells, the girl Reynolds identified as being hurt. School officials would not identify either student.

Spells' family could not be reached for comment.

Reynolds said her daughter talked to her Tuesday about being bullied, including the girl following her to the bus stop.

Regina asked to be picked up Wednesday instead of riding the bus home, Reynolds said. She had planned to go to school early and tell officials about the bullying, Reynolds said. But Regina Reynolds took a kitchen knife from home Wednesday morning, she said.

The assault happened as the girls walked into a hall. Randy Bernamonti, Jackson schools superintendent for middle schools, said the investigation will include checking a security camera in that hall to
see if it was picked up.

Bernamonti said the district would follow its disciplinary policy, which
calls for expulsion to Capital City Alternative School for a calendar year.
