VIRGINIA BEACH --Angry words between a man and the mother of their young daughter escalated to a shooting rampage at an Oceanfront condominium early Saturday, leaving her and two men dead, police said.

Police said two more people were shot and hospitalized, one left in critical condition.



Dozens of police, many armed with high-powered rifles or accompanied by dogs, descended on the 300 block of 24th St.
in search of the suspect shortly after 3 a.m.

At 6:43 a.m., the suspect, Marcus Valentino Garrett, 27, was arrested by a state police trooper.

Garrett, being held without bail, is charged with murder and is facing additional charges, said Brian Ricardo, a police spokesman.

Ricardo identified the dead as Rachel Scheer, 24, of Virginia Beach; Bryce Bauerband, 26, of Chicago; and David Kusa, 25, of South Carolina. The names of the injured were withheld.

Garrett's arrest capped a horrific night that left residents of the Ocean Place Condominiums shaken and in disbelief.

And neighbors, who only a few days ago saw police flood the area after another fatal shooting, said the single solace this time was in knowing this was not a random attack.

Rene Ball, a police spokeswoman, said the shooting was reported at 2:55 a.m. Of

orial Day weekend reunion ended tragically for a group of four men who went to high school together. Family members said the men were innocent bystanders who were caught in the crossfire of a dom

Police say 27-year-old Marcus Garrett killed his child's mother and two other people. Garrett heads to court Tuesday morning, facing multiple charges of murder.

Garrett allegedly shot five people early Saturday morning at a Virginia Beach Oceanfront condo, including 24-year-old Rachel Scher, who is the mother of Garrett's two-year-old daughter.

Also killed in the shooting were Bryce Bauerband, 26, from Chicago, and David Kusa of Columbia.

The father of one of the victims told 13News that the four friends graduated high school together in Germany and were having a reunion of sorts in Virginia Beach because that's where a mutual friend had a condo. The father said the four men barely knew Rachel Scher, who apparently was a friend of the co

James Mason, a neighbor of Rachel Scher, said he was shocked by the violence. "He (Garrett) seemed like a very nice person, very amiable, calm, very devoted to his daughter."

Police do n
ot know the motive for the killlings. They say Garrett shot five people at the condo on 24th Street after 3:00 a.m. Saturday morning, and fled with his two-year-old daughter. Police arrested Garrett hours later on I-95 near Emporia. The child was recovered unharmed.

VIRGINIA BEACH --The suspect in Saturday's triple slaying at the Oceanfront confessed to a friend that he killed the 24-year-old mother of his daughter and shot other people, according to a court affidavit.

The suspect ' Marcus Valentino Garrett , 27 ' told his

best friend from high school that he killed Rachel Scher, according to a search warrant affidavit filed by po
lice Tuesday in Circuit Court.

The affidavit also says Garrett told police that he entered the condominium through a window, armed with a gun, wearing khaki shorts, then put the shorts in the trunk of his car after changing . The clothing was later confiscated by police during a vehicle search.

VIRGINIA BEACH --The gunman who killed three people and injured two others last Saturday at an Oceanfront condominium did not randomly fire into a crowded room, according to the city's top prosecut

In an interview Friday, Commonwealth's Attorney Harvey L. Bryant III said the killer moved methodically from one victim to another, firing his handgun only five times ' once per victim ' before leaving.

The shooting occurred in the early morning hours in
the 300 block of 24th St .

Every shot fired was to the head, Bryant said. There was no wasted shot. He apparently was trying to kill all five people.</span>

Two victims survived: one male, one female . Police have not identified either survivor. The male was treated at the hospital and released. The female remains hospitalized in stable condition.

Marcus V. Garrett, 27, has been charged with one of the slayings , that of his girlfriend ' the mother of his 2-year-old daughter ' Rachel Scher, 24. Garrett was arraigned Tuesday on the murder charge.

Police are still investigating the crime, Bryant said . When they complete the
investigatio
n , he sai
d, Garrett will be charged with every crime he committed in that condominium.

Bryant would not say if he will seek the death penalty. This case is going to go all the way, he said.

Also killed in the shooting were David Kusa, 25, of Columbia, S.C. , and Bryce Bauerband, 26,
of Chicago. Neither apparently knew Garrett.

Kusa and Bauerband were among friends at the condo, some of whom had attended high school together in Germany and were gathered during Memorial Day weekend for a reunion.

Renee Guttmann of Barrington, Ill., knew both men and said by e-mail this week that they were deeply religious people ... members of religious youth organizations even while they lived as U.S. expatriates abroad.

They were proud Americans, Guttmann wrote, even though their parents' jobs took them to live in Germany for a while and other countries for part of their lives.

On Thursday, Scher's family issued a statement that said Garrett was like a son and had
been a devoted
father to the couple's [yellow sh*t-colored] child.
