HOUSTON -

A Houston father has been accused of leaving his baby daughter in a tub of scalding hot water.

Walter Lee Cockerham, 25, was charged with injury to a child. He told officers he was distracted, but investigators aren't buying his story.

Cockerham was arrested after he called 911 for his daughter's injuries. Police said his 3-month-old daughter suffered second- and third-degree burns to nearly 45 percent of her body on Thursday at the family's apartment on Phlox.

Court documents said Cockerham was caring for the infant when he left her unattended in the tub with the hot water running. He said it was an accident and that he walked away because he was distracted by a knock at the door.

Detectives said the father was negligent and it wasn't the first time he's been in trouble with the law. Cockerham was wanted in connection with an aggravated robbery in February. His criminal record dates back to when he was 17 years old.

Cockerham is being held without bond because of the pending robbery case.

The daughter is recovering at Shriner's Hospital in Galveston. Doctors said she will require extensive reconstructive surgery.

MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) – A mother is under arrest after the legs and feet of a 3-year-old boy were severely burned.

When officers responded to a call at the 2100 block of Pendleton Street, they found the boy with severe burns on his legs and feet.

The toddler was taken to LeBonheur Children's Hospital where surgery was required for his injuries.

The hospital told investigators the burns are suspicious and appear to have been caused by immersion.

The little boy's brother said that his mother, Sarita Alston, put the child in the bathtub.

Alston gave conflicting statements to investigators about how the burns came to be.

She is charged with aggravated child abuse and aggravated child neglect.

JEFFERSONVILLE, IN (WAVE) - A southern Indiana man is charged with several felonies for what police said he did to his own 4-year-old son.

Inside Jeffersonville's Claysburg Tower, police said a child suffered the unthinkable all at the hands of his father.

"Burns on the chest and genitalia and scarring and scabs on the back and buttocks and large lumps on the little head of the 4-year-old boy," said Clark County Deputy Prosecutor Linda Lamping.

Court documents said the father took a lighter and burned the little boy in at least two different places.

The boys, ages 4 and 11, told investigators the abuse did not stop there.

"They say that the little boy was burned by the father and that he was beaten and that he was punched and stomped on by the father," Lamping said.

The boys were staying with their biological father, Logan Wallace, 34, in Jeffersonville.

Wallace told police his rampage was prompted by the 4-year-old urinating on the floor.

After their 10 day stay was up, police said Wallace sent his children alone, on a TARC bus, back to their mother's home in Louisville.

The mother said she noticed something was wrong, and immediately took the 4-year-old to the hospital.

"They performed tests and found out there was a laceration on the liver that was causing internal bleeding," Lamping said.

Had it not be caught, health officials said the 4-year-old could have died.

Wallace is facing felony battery and neglect charges, and if convicted, could face some lengthy jail time.

"Indiana law does of course presume that all citizens are innocent until proven guilty, however the advisory sentence on all of these charges is 93 years," Lamping said.

Wallace has a criminal past and remains behind bars on a $250,000 full cash bond.

Racine woman charged with physical abuse of child

RACINE — 22-year-old Myrna Staten of Racine is charged with physical abuse of a child for allegedly burning her two-year-old son.

The boy was brought to St. Mary’s Emergency Room on Thursday, November 29th around 12:30 p.m. The medical staff found the boy had suffered second-degree burns to the tops of his feet and to his ankles. Additionally, there was a burn line on the boy that ended at the top of the ankles in a very straight pattern. Investigators say this type of burn is indicative of a dunking type of burn — consistent with someone being submersed in hot water.

The criminal complaint against Staten says she first told investigators that the boy had spilled a bucket of hot water on himself. She said the bucket was on the floor and filled with boiling water she was using to clean the floor. She later said the boy attempted to climb up on the bucket in an attempt to get cake from the counter — and fell into the bucket of water.

A while later, Staten told investigators she was sorry. The complaint indicates she said “she wanted to…tell the truth about what had happened.” she indicated the boy is a very difficult child and he is not like his siblings.

If convicted of the charge, Staten faces up to 40 years in prison and $100,000 in fines.

NORTH PHILADELPHIA - December 3, 2012 (WPVI) -- A mom and her boyfriend have been charged with murder in the death of her 5-year-old son in North Philadelphia.

It was just after 1:00 a.m. when police found the lifeless body of the child, Dashawn Harris, inside his mother's home in the West Poplar Apartments in the 600 block of North 13th Street.

Investigators say Dashawn had obvious signs of abuse, including bruises on his body along with cigarette burns on his chest.

He was rushed to Hahnemann University Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Lashay Patterson, 23, and her boyfriend, Christian Patrick, 25, have been arrested and formally charged with murder. They were arrested on Saturday after being questioned for several hours.

Photos of the suspects were released by police on Monday morning.

Sources say Patrick became angry with the boy while trying to teach him to read and write, beating him with a belt and burning him with a hairdryer.

Dashawn's family on his father's side stood in disbelief for hours after they learned of his death.

"I can't believe she did that," said Grace Fitch, little Dashawn's paternal grandmother. "Shay was just the sweetest person you could meet and when she got with this guy she just started getting distant."

Dashawn's paternal aunt, Tracy Merriweather, lives right next door and said she saw incidents of domestic violence between the mother and boyfriend.

Family members believe Dashawn's 3-year-old brother, who also lived in the apartment, was being abused as well.

He's now with his distraught father who said he was not aware of what was happening in the home.

Christian Patrick (L) and LaShay Patterson (R) are charged in the death of Patterson's 5-year-old son.

A North Philadelphia mother and her boyfriend accused of killing her 5-year-old son appeared in court on Wednesday.

On December 1, Police were called to West Poplar Apartments at 637 North 13th Street shortly after 1 a.m. Lashay Patterson, 23, told police she found her son Dashawn Harris unresponsive. He was rushed to the hospital where he was pronounced dead shortly before 1:30 a.m.

Investigators said the young victim showed obvious signs of physical abuse and believe it wasn't the first time young Dashawn was hurt.

"The body had obvious signs of meal preparation -- burn marks, bruising," Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey said.

"The mother and the boyfriend admit that they've struck the child and have burned the child in the past," Ramsey said.

Family members tell NBC10 he lived with Patterson and her boyfren, Christian Patrick, 25. They were both arrested and charged with murder and other related offenses.

"I'm hurt, crushed," said Francisco Harris, the boy's father. "I want to see justice in this because my son didn't deserve that. I tried to see him and they didn't let me see him. I tried to contact them and she wouldn't let me contact them."

Other family members tell NBC10 they tried repeatedly to see Dashawn as well as his younger brother but the couple repeatedly said no. Dashawn's younger brother is now staying with relatives. They believe he was also being abused.

"Not Lashay, I never would have thought she would do something like that," said the boy's grandmother Grace Fitch. "She was the sweetest person. She really was."

The question remains what exactly family members and possibly officials knew about the abuse.

"I don't know if DHS was aware of the family or not or if it had been reported," Ramsey said. "If it was not reported, as far as I'm concerned, those people outta be charged if they knew about it.

"A 5-year-old is helpless... they're not going to pick up the phone and call family services if they're being abused. It's up to adults to do that. So if we really have people who knew it was going on and failed to act then, in my opinion, there outta be consideration given towards charging them."

Ramsey hopes the parents "never see the light of day again."

"Hopefully after they're tried they get life sentences."

Patterson and Patrick appeared in court at 9 a.m. for a preliminary hearing.

Phila. Man Pleads Guilty to Rubbing Toddler With Drain Cleaner, Killing Him

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — A Philadelphia man has pleaded guilty to killing a 20-month-old toddler by rubbing drain cleaner on the child’s body.

Aaron Pace, 36, today pleaded guilty to third-degree murder for killing Sulaiman Orrell-Kirkland in 2010.

It was a painful, torturous death over five days: the boy had burns over about 20 percent of his body. According to investigators, Pace committed the atrocious act because the boy was fussing and crying during bathtime.

Pace was a family friend, described in court as “like family,” who has admitted he got mad and grabbed a container of drain-cleaning crystals and rubbed them over the boy’s body with a rag.

The result has left even veteran first-responders affected to this day, and the family is of course devastated.

The defendant, described by his defense attorney as “low functioning” with a low IQ, said he was sorry and was taking responsibility for his actions.

Pace has been sentenced to 17½ to 35 years in prison.

Cops: Mom scalds daughter's best friend with pot of noodles

2:43 p.m. CST, January 7, 2013

A teenage sleepover ended with the arrest of a woman who hurled a boiling pot of noodles at her daughter's best friend, police said.

Margie McGowan, 45, of the 4600 block of South Langley Avenue, was charged with felony aggravated battery and ordered held on $75,000 bail, according to Cook County state's attorney's spokesman Andy Conklin.

McGowan's 17-year-old daughter and another girl, 16, were in a bedroom of the home when McGowan began acting erratically around 7:30 a.m. Sunday, according to prosecutors.

The 16-year-old later started boiling water to make noodles, police said. She told officers that McGowan followed her to the kitchen and tried to start an argument, according to a police report.

As the girl went to the stove, McGowan threw the hot pot of water and noddles at her, the report said.

McGowan, who police say appeared intoxicated, told police she "isn't going to let any kids threaten her,'' according to the report.

The 16-year-old was taken to University of Chicago Hospitals, where she was treated for second-degree burns to her chest, the report stated.

OPD: Man arrested after burning infant with hot chocolate
Last Modified: Wednesday, January 16, 2013 at 12:00 p.m.

bilde

OCALA – The father of an infant was arrested Tuesday and charged with aggravated child abuse after the girl was hospitalized in mid-December with second- and third-degree burns on several areas of her body.

Jermal Adrean Morris, 19, was taken to the Marion County Jail, where he remained Wednesday with no bond.

The case began Dec. 14, when Ocala police detective Mike Hilton was called to assist the Department of Children and Families on a report involving the girl, who was 5-months-old at the time. She had been taken to Munroe Regional Medical Center and later to Shands at the University of Florida in Gainesville for treatment of burns on her mouth, legs, buttocks and genitals. Hospital officials said the wounds were not self-inflicted, according to reports.

Hilton interviewed the child's mother, who said that the day before, she had gone to work and left the baby with its father. The woman said that while she was at work, Morris called and said something was wrong with their daughter and “her skin was coming off.”

The woman said she arrived at her Parkside Gardens Apartment residence and saw blisters developing on her daughter's mouth. She said she went with the ambulance as it took her daughter to the hospital. She said Morris could not tell her how the girl was burned.

On Dec. 19, Hilton interviewed Morris, who said he took a large cup of hot chocolate from the microwave and went in to the room where the child was. He said he tripped and the hot chocolate flew through the air and a large portion of it spilled on the child, who was naked as he was changing her clothing.

Morris told Hilton he wiped the liquid off the child with linens that were on the bed and, thinking she was not burned, dressed his daughter and put her to sleep. He said that after she awoke from a nap, he was changing her diaper when he realized the skin around her private area was peeling off. He said he called the child's mother and then 911.

Hilton collected and examined the bed linens, along with a member of the Child Protection Team. They determined the child's injuries were not consistent with Morris' story.

On Tuesday, Morris was again interviewed by Hilton and changed his story. He told the detective he had heated a bottle of baby formula in the microwave and that as he entered the bedroom, spilled some of it on the baby, who was naked at the time. He said the child then went to sleep for roughly 45 minutes.

Hilton then arrested Morris and he was transported to the jail.

Fort Worth man found guilty in scalding death of his two-year-old daughter
Posted Thursday, Jan. 24, 2013

6C9Y2.Th.58.JPG

FORT WORTH -- A man accused of killing his two-year-old daughter by holding her down in scalding water was found guilty Thursday.

Charles Bellamy, 27, seemed emotionless as jurors agreed with prosecutors that he be made to serve half of whatever sentence is handed down before he is eligible for parole, and that probation be taken off the table in the death of Jaz'mine Howard.

17Xdbn.St.58.JPG
ZoYio.St.58.jpg

Joy Howard, the toddler's mother, had to be helped out of the courtroom after closing arguments during which one of the prosecutors described how Jaz'mine must have fought the tortuous death she endured on March 15, 2011.

Walking toward the exit, Joy Howard was bent over and crying as she inched her way out of the courtroom, buoyed by the arms of prosecutor Kimberly D'Avignon.

During her closing, D'Avignon told the jury that for at least two minutes, Jaz'mine must have cried out to her father, perplexed by what was happening to her.

"Imagine how many times Jaz'mine would have had time to say, 'Daddy stop, stop daddy, daddy why, daddy what did I do?' " D'Avignon said.

On Wednesday, Bellamy took the stand in his own defense and admitted that his lack of responsibility caused his daughter's death.

His defense attorneys argued for the jury to return with a guilty verdict on the lesser charge of criminally negligent homicide, a state jail felony that could garner a prison sentence as short as two years.

"He's not going to sit back and let you believe that he intentionally did this to his child," said defense attorney Clay Graham during closing arguments. "That's not true. Bellamy told you what happened. He was there. He didn't have to do that. It took a lot of stones to do that."

But prosecutor Dale Smith countered that Bellamy's testimony on Wednesday was just a story and nothing more. There was no scientific or medical evidence backing up that story, Smith said during his closing arguments.

Bellamy did not have any explanation for the burns on Jaz'mine's body and took time to clean up the murder scene after Jaz'mine died, Smith said. He did not take the time to obtain medical attention for Jaz'mine before she died, testimony on Wednesday revealed.

"He did not want to take responsibility then and he does not want to take responsibility now," Smith said. "His own brother said he was acting normal when he got home and he called his brother a liar."

Smith said Bellamy also took the time to clean up the crime scene before authorities arrived. Remnants of Jaz'mine's skin were found in the living room, bedroom and bathroom, but not in the bathtub, when police came to investigate, Smith said.

"Felony murder is what he deserves and what he's responsible for," Smith told the jury. "You know how she struggled and how she fought. Anything less than felony murder is an injustice."

Joy Howard described her two-year-old daughter as a diva as she testified for the prosecution on Wednesday. Jaz'mine Howard was mature for her age and a real girly-girl, the mother said. The toddler liked to have her hair and nails done and liked wearing sunglasses.

"When I told people she was two, she told them she was four," Joy Howard told the jury.

Joy Howard, 21, said she had never seen Jaz'mine's father mistreat any of his other eight children, but he seemed to be more bothered than she when the toddler had a potty training mishap. Joy Howard said she chalked it up to a lack of experience.

"He's a new dad," she told the jury. "He hadn't been in her life that much."

The punishment phase of the trial will begin at 2 p.m. in state District Judge Louis Sturns' court.

Bobby Davis Jr.

Allen Parish authorities investigating child's death By Olivia Vidal

OBERLIN, LA (KPLC) -
Bond has been set for a suspect arrested in a case involving a child's death in Allen Parish.

Bobby Davis Jr. remains in jail on $100,000 bond. He has been charged with aggravated battery.

More charges are possible, said Allen Parish Sheriff Doug Hebert, pending the autopsy report. Authorities said they still await the report.

Allen Parish authorities said the Sheriff's Office received a call Thursday afternoon from Allen Parish Hospital officials who reported a deceased 2-year-old girl with severe third-degree burns on her back.

Now, investigators with the APSO are pointing fingers at 28-year-old Davis Jr., reportedly the mother's live-in boyfriend, who they believe is responsible for the young girl's death.

"After 20 years in law enforcement, it's probably the saddest thing I've seen or would ever see again," Hebert said.

The 2-year-old victim, Tatiana Holyfield, suffered third-degree burns by means of a space heater, something Hebert said was a red flag for child abuse.

"She didn't fall on the heater. The heater didn't fall on her. Physical contact with that heater was made to happen over a prolonged period. Long enough for the metal grating to burn through the skin and the flesh to the bone," Hebert said. Now dat's wha I calls a well done nigglet, knowha'm'say'n.

While the mother of Tatiana was at work, Davis was watching the young girl at her home. And after much investigation, law enforcement pinned Davis as the one responsible for the abuse.

Hebert said it is one of the worst cases of child abuse he's ever seen.

Numerous bruises and cuts were also discovered on the toddler's body throughout the investigation.

"There's no punishment that will ever replace or be true justice for that child," Hebert said. "It's another one of those memories I wish I didn't have." We at NNN see this kind of thing on a daily basis, I guess we just got use to it, knowha'm'say'n.

Hebert said Davis does not have a criminal record and this is his first arrest. Now, this might be a first!

"We're taking every precaution to make sure that this investigation is done right and properly and so that the person responsible hopefully gets to spend the rest of his life in jail," he said.

Currently, no bond is set for Davis. And as of right now, Hebert said there is no evidence linking the mother to her daughter's death.

Hebert said he expects the case to be ruled a homicide but authorities are awaiting a coroner's report for a cause of death to make that determination.
