Aspiring rapper arrested in killing of his promoter

An 18-year-old aspiring rapper from Pittsburg nicknamed "Kanyva" was arrested Monday after he reportedly shot and killed his promoter because she told him he didn't have the talent to sell records, police said.

Juston Michael Potts was booked on suspicion of murder after confessing to shooting Shani Renee Holloway, 31, as she sat in a car with her 23-y
ar-old boyfriend Sunday in Pittsburg, said city police Inspector John Conaty.

Holloway had agreed three months ago to promote Potts' fledgling music career in a "loose business agreement,&q

uot; Conaty said.

"It's kind of senseless, really," Conaty said. "According to
both (Potts and Holloway's boyfriend), there wasn't a lot of animosity. It's just that the victim wasn't approaching his career in a positive way. She was negative about his prospects. ... He felt resentment as a result of that."

Conaty said the case started mysteriously when police received reports of a shooting at 5:45 p.m. Sunday outside townhomes on the 3000 block of Peppermill Circle, but arrived to find no victim and no shooter.

However, witnesses told patrol officers about a brutal shooting. Within minutes, a Kaiser Permanente hospital in neighboring Antioch called police to report that Holloway's boyfriend had brought her in, Conaty said.

Holloway
was later taken to the trauma center at John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek, where doctors pronounced her dead at 10:05 p.m.

Holloway's boyfriend told investigators that he and Hol
lowa
y had been driving down Loveridge Road in Pittsburg when they came upon Potts and agreed to give him a ride to Peppermill Circle, Conaty s
aid.

Potts got out of the car when Holloway's boyfriend pulled into a parking lot outside the townhomes, Conaty said. Soon a black sport utility vehicle pulled up across the street, and Potts walked over to speak to its occupants.

When Potts returned to the car, he pulled out a handgun, went to the passenger side and shot Holloway twice, Conaty said.

Potts ran back to the SUV, which then sped away as Holloway's raced to the hospital, Conaty said.

Conaty said investigators then identified Potts as the man Holloway and her boyfriend knew as "Kanyva," and found his Dodge Caravan parked outside a relative's apartment on the 10
0 block of Pheasant Circle.

Potts was spotted at 2:30 a.m. Monday hiding inside a different car when he tapped on the windows and spoke to two passers-by in an attempt to get a ride
out of t
he area, Conaty said.
