Speech by neo-Nazi draws BSU protesters

MUNCIE -- Protesters outnumbered neo-Nazis during a rally Tuesday at city hall.

Dmitriy Sklyarov, 19, Gaston, self-proclaimed leader of the Delaware County Skinheads, and Neal Joitke, who said he was Michigan leader of the American National Socialist Workers' Party, spoke for about 30 minutes on the topic of white supremacy and hatred for Jews and blacks.

The two men took turns holding a sign that read "Say no to Jewish immagration (sic)."

Five protesters, meanwhile, held picket signs that read "Racism sucks" and "Pride without prejudice."

"There are just as many people, if not more, that stand against this nonsense," said Adam Duston, one of five students from Ball State University and Ivy Tech State College who protested the 2 p.m. event.

About a dozen police officers watched from outside and inside city Hall.

Sklyarov, dressed in a black trenchcoat with a red swastika, maintained the low turnout for his speech was due to the fact that most of his followers are high school students and were still in class.
