Deadly Crash in Waterbury

WATERBURY -- The man accused of causing a tragic crash that killed a Connecticut couple heads to court Wednesday.

The accident happened yesterday afternoon at Freight and Riverside streets near the intersection of Interstate 84 and Route 8.

Police say a man driving a stolen car crashed into them.

The suspect will be arraigned here at Waterbury Superior Court even as an investigation continues into the possibility he was running from police when the crash happened.

The wreck is what led police to suspect Tamik Heath. Police say the 22 year old was driving a stolen Saturn when he ran a red light smashing into a red Jeep Cherokee.

The two people in the Jeep were killed. Police identified them as a couple in their 60's from Prospe

ct.

Police say an officer pulled suspect Heath over before the crash but say it's still u
nclear if he was being chased by officers when he ran that red light.

Heath is being held on $3 million bond.

By CHRISTINE DEMPSEY, Courant Staff Writer WATERBURY -- A couple died in a three-car crash at a city intersection Tuesday afternoon when a speeding, stolen car crashed into the side of their Jeep , flipping it, authorities said.

The victims were identified Wednesday as Joseph and Kathleen Ivkovich, both 68, who lived in Prospect, police said.

Police charged Timeek Heath of Waterbury with two counts of first-degree manslaughter, first-degree larceny and several motor vehicle crimes. He was held on $3 million bond and was to be arraigned today in Waterbury Superior Court.

The accident occurred at about 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at Freight and Riverside streets, Capt. William Covel said. He said a stolen Saturn was heading north on Freight Street when it crashed into the side of the Jeep, which had
r
been heading east on
Riverside Street.

A third car at the intersection also was struck. The driver told police that Heath's car ran a red light before hitting the Jeep. Covel said the driver of the third car was not hurt.

Sgt. Chris Corbett, a Waterbury police spokesman, said authorities were investigating whether officers were pursuing Heath at the time of the crash. He said officers had tried to stop Heath earlier, but he took off.

Waterbury Deputy Fire Chief David Stankus said the first firefighters to see the couple hanging by their seat belts in the overturned Jeep could immediately tell they were seriously injured.

"It was so severe we really threw caution to the wind to get these people out of the car," he said

"It was just a difficult crash for my guys," he said of the firefighters, who are routinely told they may get help from the Employee Assistance Program after such crashes. "It was just an ugly hour."
