No passports required for new EU migrants
31st December 2006
News article filed by BNP news team
Romanian and Bulgarian immigrants will be able to enter the UK without a passport when the two countries join the European Union tomorrow. The government is allowing the citizens of two of Europe's poorest countries to enter the UK with only an identity card, which in some cases will consist of just a shabby piece of card with a photo stapled to it.
A Romanian source predicts that 450,000 Romanian migrants will head to Britain in 2007, and it is believed that 150,000 Bulgarians will also enter the country.
The government had the power to make it compulsory for the new immigrants to carry passports but the Home Office refused to implement this.
Many would-be migrants from the two countries see Britain as a soft touch, with the ease of getting work and also claiming benefits. Low cost and charter flights into the UK's airports will allow easy access for the expected flood of migrants.
Many British people are finding it hard to get work owing to the majority of low skilled jobs being taken by Eastern European immigrants. The problem will only get worse after 1st January 2007.
