NEWPORT NEWS -- The plot of the mystery-mouse-in-the-soup case thickens.
Police discovered a mousetrap at the Hampton home of the mother-and-son pair who
said
they found a mouse in a bowl of Cracker Barrel soup, according to documents filed in Newport News Circuit Court. Police said the trap was tripped.

The soup saga so far:
On May 8, Carla Patterson was eating at the Cracker Barrel restaurant across from Patrick Henry Mall when she said she discovered a dead mouse in a bowl of vegetable soup. Her screams prompted other patrons to leave, and the incident caused Cracker Barrel to stop serving vegetable soup at all of its 497 stores nationwide. Sales at Cracker Barrels in the area declined, according to the company.
Then, on June 1, Patterson, 36, and her 20-year-old son, Rick
y Lee Patterson, were charged with attempted extortion and conspiracy to commit a felony after authorities said they made up the hoax and tried to get Cracker Barrel to pay them off.
An autop
sy on the mouse determined it died of a skull fracture, not from drowning in soup. Nor was it cooked, according to Cracker Barrel.
