Two from Ottawa arrested in terror bust

OTTAWA - Two people have been arrested for terrorism related charges in a joint police investigation involving the RCMP and Ottawa police.

The RCMP have called a press conference for Thursday.

The raid at 91 Esterlawn Private began at about 7 a.m.

At about 8 a.m., A Division's Integrated National Security Enforcement Team investigators arrested two Ottawa residents in relation to terrorist offences. Search warrants are being executed in order to secure additional evidence. More arrests are anticipated.

Neighbours said a man and a woman lived at the house for about a year. The woman wore a burka
and never spoke to anyone.

"I've never even seen her outside," said a neighbour who asked not to be named due to the nature of the charges. "I've never talked to them other than the man, if we happened to be coming, we'd say hello."

The man would acknowledge them but that was it.

Neighbours didn't believe they had any children.

The police arrived at about 7 a.m. - or least were noticed by one neighbour who went outside to grab the newspaper.

"There were police everywhere," she said.

A 20-year-old man detained during a probe into an alleged homegrown terrorism plot remains in custody after his bail hearing was put off until Friday.

Awso Peshdary has not been charged with any terrorism-related offences, but has been detained on domestic assault charges since Aug. 27.

Peshdary's lawyer, Richard Morris, asked in an Ottawa court Tuesday for the hearing to be moved to Friday to allow more time to review material in the case.

Peshdary was first arrested Friday morning in Ottawa on his way to work, but was not charged with any terrorism-related offences.

Instead, police laid an unrelated assault charge. He was granted bail on Saturday, then immediately rearrested by Ottawa police on similar charges related to a separate incident. On Sunday, a justice of the peace adjourned Peshdary's second bail hearing until Tuesday.

During this time, the RCMP have not questioned Peshdary again or come forward with any terrorism-related charges.

It's not clear what Peshdary's connection is to the RCMP terrorism probe, and police will only say that the investigation is ongoing.

Hiva Mohammad Alizadeh, 30, and Misbahuddin Ahmed, 26, both of Ottawa, and Khurram Syed Sher, 28, of London, Ont., were arrested last week and are accused of conspiring to facilitate terrorism with others in Canada, Afghanistan, Iran, Pakistan and Dubai over the past two years.

They are scheduled to make a video court appearance on Wednesday, at which time their lawyers hope to set up bail hearings to argue for their release.
