NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- A mother and a grandmother have been indicted in the death of a 17 month-old boy, who detectives say was starved to death.

The 23 year-old mother, Chisa Hughes, faces first-degree murder and two counts of aggravated child neglect. The grandmother, 49 year-old Katina Ballard, was indicted on failure to report child abuse and aggravated child neglect. Both were arrested Wednesday.

Jerald Hicks Jr. was brought to the emergency room by his father, Jerald Hicks, in January. Police said the baby had a body temperature level so low it could not be registered, and he weighed only 10 pounds.

The father was also arrested and is currently being held without bond after being indicted on charges of first-degree murder, aggravated child abuse and child neglect.

Police said a second child, a 2 year-old girl, was also suffering from severe malnutrition.

HOUSTON -- A father who said his 2-year-old son died from a fall in their northeast Harris County apartment was charged with his death, KPRC Local 2 reported Wednesday.

Harris County sheriff's deputies said Darius Smith called for help when his son, Zion, collapsed on the floor of their apartment in the 500 block of Normandy Street on Oct. 27.

Homicide investigators questioned Smith and determined that the evidence did not fit his story.

"All indications are that it's shaken baby syndrome. The child suffered severe brain damage and severe retinal hemorrhaging," said Sgt. Eric Clegg with the Harris County Sheriff's Office
." We did investigate it at that time. It's been an ongoing investigation. We've just recently received the final reports from the medical examiner's office."

An autopsy revealed that Zion died from severe brain trauma.

Zion's mother was at work and not at home at the time.

Smith was charged with capital murder on Tuesday. He was booked into the Harris County Jail without bond.

Smith said nothing as he was led out of the Harris County Sheriff's Office in handcuffs Wednesday.

Investigators said Smith's other son, Marco, died when he was 5 months old and in Smith's care. Detectives said no criminal charges were filed in that case. Officials do not know if that investigation will be opened again.

Boy, 4, Dies In Hot Car While Mom In Nail Salon
Boy In Car For Three Hours

UPDATED: 3:20 pm EDT July 21, 2008

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. -- A Florida woman preparing for her wedding over the weekend is instead mourning the death of her 4-year-old son after she left him in a hot SUV for three hours Saturday, reported WPBF, Newsnet5's sister station.

The Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office said Mirlande Jean-Baptiste, 29, may not have known that her son Gregory Cesar was in her Ford Expedition while she was inside a nail salon Saturday.

Family members said that Jean-Baptiste had dropped off several childre
n at a relative's house before going to the salon with her sister.

Police told WPBF News 25 that they believe Gregory may have snuck back inside the SUV without his mother's knowledge.

Jean-Baptiste was getting her nails done in preparation for her wedding, which was planned for Sunday.

Investigators said that the boy was in the hot car for about three hours while temperatures outside reached 90 degrees.

Gregory's mother and aunt called 911 upon finding the boy unconscious inside the vehicle. He was taken to Palms West Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Police said the case is still under investigation.

Newborn Found Dead in Dumpster

FONTANA -- Authorities are searching for the parents of a newborn boy found dead inside a dumpster in Fontana.

A resident found the baby's body Sunday morning as she was emptying trash at the Meadowood Apartments. Shelly Marks noticed a backpack with what appeared to be a doll inside.

"I moved it to see and it didn't move like a doll and I realized what it was and I went and called the police", Marks said.

The baby's umbilical cord was still attached, officials said.

Investigators say the baby is identical to another newborn found dead nearly two years ago in a field directly across the
street from the Meadowood Apartments.

That baby was a stillborn, according to officials. The mother was never found.

"Geographically, they're dumped within about 100 yards of each other, first of all; and second, they're both baby boys that look to have the same characteristics as far as race... a mix of Hispanic and Africoon-Americoon", said Sgt. Jeff Decker of the Fontana Police Department.

If the coroner's office determines the newborn boy was alive when he was thrown into the dumpster, murder charges could apply.

Aside from legal action, Marks says the mother will have to live with her decision forever. "A baby doesn't get discarded, it gets the respect and decency of a burial".

According to investigators, officers were called to the Highland Creek Apartments in the 1300 block of Elmview, Monday, August 18, 2008, around 9:00 p.m., about a baby who was not breathing. When police arrived on the scene, they found 3 month-old Jalissa Fuller [/CO

The baby’s mother told investigators that she went to work around 5:30 a.m. that morning, leaving her two children with their father, Julius Fuller. She says when she got home around 8:50 that night, she found the baby unconscious and called for an ambulance.

Detectives say Julius Fuller was at a friend’s home while investigators were at the apartment and refused to return as long as police were in the apartment. Fuller was arrested the next day.

The Shelby County Medical Examiner’s Office says that the three month-old died from blunt force trauma to the head.

The Memphis Child Advocacy Center will be raising a memorial flag for Jalissa Fuller, Friday, August 22. Center officials say this will be the ninth flag to be raised for children who have died as a result of abuse in 2008.

FW Woman Jailed In Death Of 6-Week-Old Son
Investigators Probe Deaths Of 2 Other Babies

POSTED: 10:03 am CDT September 26, 2008
UPDATED: 1:19 pm CDT September 26, 2008

FORT WORTH, Texas -- A Fort Worth woman is jailed in suburban Kansas City on charges in the smothering death of her 6-week-old son.

17566268_240X180.jpg

Police in Lee's Summit said Thursday that Sweet Cherry Ann Halliburton:D, 29, told them that she killed her son. Investigators said she told them late Tuesday that she had pulled her car off Interstate 435 near Raytown and smothered the infant on her lap.

Investigators said Halliburton previously had two babies die of what was ruled as sudden infant death syndrome, and that they are also probing those deaths.

Police in Fort Worth said a Halliburton child died of SIDS.

On Sept. 6, 2007, Fort Worth police initiated an investigation into the death of Halliburton's 4-month-old baby. According to her report, she was in the shower and left the baby on the bed to sleep. When she returned from the shower, the infant was face down and not breathing.

She later told the medical staff at Cook Children's Medical Center that she was sleeping with the infant in her bed, and was in the bed the entire time -- no mention of the shower -- when she woke up to find her baby not breathing.

The Crimes Against Children Unit began conducting a murder investigation, but the death was ruled as SIDS.

This week, a Crimes Against Children Detective was flown to Missouri to re-interview Halliburton in hopes of gaining enough evidence to reopen the investigation.

So far, Halliburton has confessed to the Missouri murder but has said nothing about the Fort Worth case other than asking if Texas had the death penalty.

Missouri investigators said they believe the other SIDS death occurred in South Dakota.

Assistant Jackson County Prosecutor Ted Hunt said SIDS cases are difficult to distinguish from smothering deaths.

MIAMI -- Police in Miami have made an arrest in connection with the death of a 6-month-old boy on Tuesday afternoon.

On Thursday, police arrested Watson J. Dorval, 24, and charged him with second-degree murder.

Dorval, who was watching the his girlfriend's children at the time the incident occurred, had been questioned by police on Wednesday but was released. According to police, the child's mother was not home. Dorval is not the children's father.

On Thursday, the medical examiner determined the baby died of blunt trauma injuries. According to police, Watson struck the baby multiple times.

Those who know Watson told Local 10's Constance Jones they can’t believe what happened.

“I’m very shocked. He was just saying he did nothing to this baby. He was crying, saying I haven’t done nothing to the baby," Shaunta Black said.

The victim’s family appealed to the judge, asking for custody of the mother’s three other children. But, for now, the judge denied custody. The children remain in the custody of the Department of Children & Families.

MIAMI -- Frustration and anger boiled over Thursday night outside the Northwest Miami-Dade home where, according to police, a 6-month-old baby boy was beaten to death on Tuesday.

Relatives of the infant’s mother and father gathered at the home, where a heated discussion over where to point blame took place.

The baby’s mother has not been charged with a crime, but her boyfriend, 24-year-old Watson Dorval, was arrested and charged with second-degree murder in connection with the baby’s death.

An autopsy revealed the baby died of blunt force trauma.

"I feel like the detective should look hard into this case because he did not beat that baby,"said Shelda St. Vim, the suspect’s sister. “Of course they show the baby was beaten, but can they show who beat the baby?"

Detectives arrived at the N.W. 77th Terrace home Tuesday afternoon after receiving a call that a baby was having trouble breathing. The infant died a short time later.

Police noticed the baby’s 3-year-old brother was also injured. The toddler was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital for treatment.

State records show the children’s mother, who has a total of four children, has a prior record with the Department of Children & Families.

"She should have never had custody of those kids," said Shamauri Love, the baby's godfather.

Records show that, in the past, Dorval had been charged with battery, marijuana possession, selling cocaine and grand theft.

Dorval was denied bond at a hearing Friday morning.

A DCF custody hearing is scheduled Friday to determine where the remaining children should be placed.

WEST PALM BEACH — A 29-year-old woman pleaded guilty to second-degree murder this morning in the beating death of a 3-year-old boy.

Tia Danae Roundtree of South Bay faces between 21 and 40 years in prison when she's sentenced Dec. 11, said her attorney, Assistant Public Defender Travis Dunnington. Prosecutors had earlier filed a notice they intended to seek the death penalty.

Tia Danae Roundtree told detectives she had “whoopedâ┚¬ Kelvin, whose head and body were covered with impressions from her belt.

The child, Kelvin Jackson, had a fractured skull, a bruised scalp and his body were covered with impressions from the decorative circles on Roundtree's white belt, according to a court record.

Roundtree told detectives she had "whooped" Kelvin, who was her boyfriend's son, and may have hit too hard, but that she didn't think he would be badly injured. She told them she repeatedly hit Kelvin with the belt and her hand before putting him and her own then-3 year-old son down for a nap that day in 2007.

Attorney Dunnington said Roundtree had no prior criminal record and by all accounts was wonderful single mother to her own child. She had worked overtime in Texas as a factory supervisor to provide for him.

"There were no indications of any prior abuse before this, " Dunnington said.

Police say the father of a 6 month old baby is wanted for its murder.

Greenville police are looking for Ronnie Foggs.

They say the baby was brought to Pitt County Memorial Hospital on November 6th. The baby died November 15th after being removed from life support.

Authorities say the autopsy showed the cause of death as shaken baby syndrome and that the baby had previous injuries, including a broken leg and a broken rib.

Police say during the investigation the father refused to talk with detectives and went as far as to hide from police.

MONTGOMERY COUNTY
Teen Father Is Charged With Killing 2-Year-Old

By Dan Morse
Washington Post Staff Writer
Saturday, January 10, 2009; Page B04

A 2-year-old Montgomery County boy known among family members for his constant smile and his habit of putting a baseball cap on backward at the start of each day was killed by his teenage father this week, police alleged yesterday.

Darryl E. Powell, 17, has been charged with first-degree murder in the death of Zjaire Williams[/
B]
, who was found with bruises on his body and cuts to his lips inside Powell's home Wednesday, police said. Zjaire, whose name was pronounced Zaire, lived with his mother and grandmother in Damascus but had spent the night at his father's residence.

"We are beyond devastated," said the child's maternal grandmother, LaSonia "Monique" Williams. "He was a beautiful, happy, vibrant, curly-haired little boy, the light of our lives."

Williams said the child, whom she nicknamed "Toogie," liked to wear a football helmet that belonged to a 12-year-old uncle, never mind that it was too large. "He wouldn't let you take it off," she said.

She said her 17-year-old daughter was in shock. "It's incomprehensible to us," Williams said.

Hoping they could help another child, Williams said, the family decided to donate Zjaire's organs.

About 6:20 a.m. Wednesday, police and rescue workers went to Powell's residence in the 9400 block of Merust Lane in Gaithersburg in response
to a 911 call about an "unresponsive infant," county police said. Zjaire was taken to Shady Grove Adventist Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The state medical examiner's office ruled the death a homicide, finding that it was caused by multiple injuries. The child had injuries to his head and abdomen.

Police said Zjaire's mother agreed to take Zjaire to his father's house after Powell asked whether the boy could spend the night with him. Investigators think the child was in good condition when he was dropped off, police said. Police are investigating how the injuries were incurred.

"Detectives were told that the father and son watched TV for a while and then both went to sleep on two separate sofas in the living room," police said in a statement. "Powell woke up during the early morning hours, and saw that his son was face down on cushions on the floor. He could not wake him."

Powell was being held without bond in the county jail last night. Online court records did n
ot indicate that he had an attorney.

Police Search Home of Slain Teen's Mother

Police are searching the Prince William County home of the mother of Alexis Glover, the 13-year-old girl found slain in Woodbridge Friday, eight miles from where she disappeared Wednesday, sources told News4.

Investigators arrived at the home before 6 p.m. Tuesday.

Alexis last was seen in the parking lot at the Central Library in Manassas. Her body was found in a creek bed along Asdee Lane near Old Hickory Golf Club in the Woodbridge area.

Alexis, also known as "Lexie," had run away from her mother. Alexis' mother said the girl was adopted and suffered from severe developmental and emot
ional disabilities because of past abuse.

Because Alexis had a history of running away, she had been fitted with a GPS bracelet. It was found near the library.

After 6-month-old Ania Duncan disappeared Thursday, her grandmother insisted the baby's parents knew what had happened to her.

Hours later, Ania's father directed police to a garbage bin at a shopping plaza near West 95th Street and Lorain Avenue. Inside, officers found Ania dead. She had been wrapped in a green blanket and put inside a garbage bag.

The discovery ended a 14-hour search on the West Side. Police spent the morning using a helicopter and teams of officers to search garbage cans, abandoned homes and snow piles.

"It's not the ending we all wanted," said Deputy Police Chief Ed To
mba. "It's a very sad story."

Police arrested Demetrius Duncan, 19, and the baby's 17-year-old mother after Ania disappeared. Each parent gave detectives conflicting information about what they had been doing Wednesday, Lt. Thomas Stacho said.

Duncan has not been charged and was in jail as part of the homicide investigation. Police released Ania's mother and did not file charges, Lt. Thomas Stacho said.

The Cuyahoga County Department of Children and Family Services investigated the 17-year-old mother in September after receiving a complaint that the baby was not receiving proper care.

The baby was not found to be neglected or at risk, but the department kept the case open so that the mother and child would receive services, said Deborah Forkas, the agency's director. The father was not a part of or involved with the case, she said.

Kawanis  Duncan, Demetrius' mother, said she cared for Ania along with two of her children in an ap
artment in the 9300 block of Denison Avenue. Demetrius did not live at the apartment, Kawanis Duncan said, but often visited her, his siblings and his daughter there.

The baby's mother -- who is not being identified by The Plain Dealer because she is a juvenile -- was also at the apartment Wednesday, police said.

Around 12:30 a.m. Thursday, Ania's godmother called police and told them the infant was missing. Police formed an abduction response team and began searching.

Ania's mother told police she had slept all day. When she awoke about 7 p.m., Ania wasn't there but the mother wasn't alarmed, Stacho said.

Duncan initially told police he last saw Ania when he went to the store across the street from the apartment.

Duncan then changed his story.

He told police he went to sell drugs and when he returned, the baby was gone, Stacho said.

"He left around 1:30 p.m. to sell crack and was gone until 3 p.m.," Stacho said. "When h
e came back, he found the doors open and the baby missing."

But police said they have video that contradicted Duncan's explanation.

Surveillance video from the shopping plaza where police discovered Ania's body showed Duncan walking past the building Wednesday afternoon carrying a trash bag, Stacho said.

The video then shows Duncan placing the trash bag inside the garbage bin in the 9500 block of Lorain Avenue.

Duncan told police he returned home Wednesday afternoon to find his daughter was not breathing. He told police he tried to revive Ania but could not, so he took her, wrapped her body and dumped it in a garbage bin, Stacho said.

Kawanis Duncan said she called home from work at 10:20 p.m. and her son told her everything was fine.

Kawanis Duncan clutched Ania's pink blanket hours before her granddaughter was found dead. She believed her son and Ania's mother knew how Ania disappeared.

"I have nothing to say to either of them," Duncan
said a few hours before Ania was found. "How can you tell me you don't know what happened?"

The 17-year-old's mother said her daughter was in a state of shock Thursday afternoon. Madeline Cintron said the baby often stayed with her and her daughter, who live a few blocks from the Denison Avenue apartment where Ania was last seen alive.

Cintron said her daughter loved Ania and was a good mother. She added that her daughter had nothing to do with Ania's death.

"She didn't need to die like that," Cintron said, sobbing. "She was our life. I didn't know that this could happen."

”˜We will always search for Adji’

NAPLES — Volunteers are urged to help find 6-year-old Adji Desir, the Immokalee boy who went missing nearly one week ago.

090112NS-DesirAdji_t176.jpg

The Collier County Sheriff’s Office will hand out fliers to volunteers from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Immokalee Community Park, 321 N. 1st St. They'll be asked to distribute the fliers in their communities to help find Adji.

Thursday, the soft and sometimes unsteady voice of the child's mother spoke of an unimaginable despair.

“I feel like my life is almost over," said Marie Neida, 36, in Creole during a press conference Thursday.

Six-year-
old Adji went missing Saturday from his grandmother’s home at Farm Worker Village in Immokalee.

And on Thursday, there was still no sign of the developmentally disabled boy, who police say has the mental capacity of a 2-year-old.

With help from Collier County Sheriff’s Office translator Nymphgamey Oboute, Adji’s mother and stepfather gave an update on their family’s status and how they’re all holding up.
