Dare go da welfare check

http://www.ketv.com/news/14237170/detail.html OMAHA, Neb. -- An autopsy performed Monday shows a 1-year-old child who died at a hospital this week had a traumatic head injury.

Charges will be delayed until after the baby's funeral.

Douglas County Attorney Don Kleine said Davion Winrow's death is under investigation. Kleine said charges have not been filed, but those could include child abuse and accidental death.

Police said the boy was taken to the Nebraska Medical Center in the early hours of Thursday with a critical injury that wasn't described. He died at the hospital.

Winrow was in foster care since he was born. Police said he was taken to the hospital by the person who was caring for him at the time. The name of the individual is not available because the investigation is still ongoing, police said.

Davion was born on Sept. 18, 2006, to Lisa Moten. ?(White)? According to court records, she was a known alcoholic and a drug addict. As a newborn, Davion tested positive for cocaine and was placed in foster care, and Moten's parental rights were terminated, records show.

Records show that Moten had previously lost parental rights to three other children, two in 1994 and one in 2003. She should have been spayed after the first one.

OMAHA, Neb. -- A man charged in connection with a child's death was considering adopting the child, according to Douglas County Attorney Don Kleine, and Kleine questions why the man was ever allowed to pursue adoption.

On Wednesday, Joleet M. Poole, 23, was booked into jail on suspicion of child abuse resulting in death.

Davion Winrow, 1, was taken to the Nebraska Medical Center last week with a critical head injury. He died at the hospital.

Kleine said that after living his whole life in foster care, Davion had recently gone to live with Poole as Poole considered adoption.

"He doesn't appear to have been taken to the hospital for some time," Kleine said of the boy, after studying the injuries doctors reported. "The child was a ward of the state, which means (Health and Human Services) and (Child Protective Services) has custody of the child. The child was with a foster mother, and apparently the defendant was someone they were looking at as a potential prospective adoptive parent."

Kleine said on Thursday that he wants to know why Davion was allowed to stay with Poole, especially considering his violent past. Juvenile court records show that Poole stabbed a boy in 1992. Soon after, his mother's parental rights were terminated.

HHS, contacted by KETV NewsWatch 7, was asked whether it checked Poole's background. A representative declined to comment on the specific case but said that the state performs criminal background checks for all prospective foster and adoptive parents. However, HHS does not check juvenile court records for histories of violence.

If convicted, Poole faces a maximum penalty of 20 years to life in prison. Poole's arraignment is scheduled for Friday morning.

DETROIT -- A mammy was charged on Monday with the beating death of her 3-year-old niglet sow on Thursday.

Nicole Halloway, 32, was charged with first-degree niglet abuse and murder.

Police said Halloway admitted to abusing the niglet at the Packard Motel on East Grand Boulevard in Detroit.

Police said they believe she may have suffered a mental breakdown when she beat the niglet and then threw her into the wall.

EMS said the niglet was dead when they arrived to room 105.

Halloway rented the room for one night with the niglet's father and another man, according to police.

The hotel manager told Local 4 News that he saw and heard nothing, and learned of the killing from the police.

Halloway is being held without bail at the Warren County jail. The judge said he did not post bond because of the “heinous" nature of the crime.

If convicted, she faces life, plus 15 years in prison.

"There were obvious signs of child abuse with this child," said Cobb Police Officer Cassie Reece.

Neighbors said they had seen Krystol Akhimie's family moving out of the home two days ago.

Michael Ryan, left, and Geneva Foster have been charged with felony injury to a child.
A Houston couple was charged Friday with the starvation and abuse of a 13-year-old boy they kept locked in their attic, MyFoxHouston reported.

Geneva Foster, the boy's mother, and Michael Ryan, his stepfather, were arrested and charged with felony injury to a child for keeping the boy locked in a closet or attic without food, MyFoxHouston reported.

Click here for more on this story at MyFoxHouston.com.

The boy also showed signs of brutal physical abuse -- broken bones, bite scars and damage to his liver, pancreas and kidneys, according to the Harris County Sheriff's Office.

A spokeswoman for Child Protective Services told MyFoxHouston that the boy weighed only 72 pounds and had the appearance of a 7-year-old when he was discovered, and that his only nourishment came from cans of diet supplement Ensure.

Four other children who lived in the home were removed and placed in foster care, but the 13-year-old appeared to be the only one of the five children who was abused, MyFoxHouston reported. The boy was taken to a local hospital.

Foster and Ryan are being held on $250,000 bail each.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- A woman was arrested and charged with murder, drug possession and sexual battery on Monday after a 2-year-old was found dead on Sunday of an apparent skull fracture.

The girl was being watched inside a Sunrise apartment when she suffered the injuries. She was confirmed dead on Sunday night at Westside Regional Hospital.
14349141_240X180.jpg

Tyra Williams, 29, had nothing to say to reporters as she was transported to the Broward County Jail on Monday night.

Police said she confessed to detectives that she abused the girl to her death.

"We're pretty confident that the child was struck, causing her to fall down and strike her head on a hard object." Voss said. "The child sustained multiple skull fractures, including a large one, which went from ear to ear."

Sunrise police said the child was also the victim of sexual battery. Williams has declined to talk to authorities about those injuries, Voss said.

"The medical examiner discovered severe rectal bleeding, I’m sorry, rectal tearing on the child," Voss said. "It is consistent with some type of forced penetration."

Police said the abuse happened at Williams' apartment in Sunrise, where she lived with the 2-year-old.

"The medical examiner doesn't determine if it's criminal acts," Lt. Robert Voss of the Sunrise police said. "They determined that this injury was sustained by this child and contributed to her death. It's our job to determine if it's criminal or not."

Police questioned a man at the scene who witnesses said was the child's mother's ex-boyfriend. Although he is not a suspect, there was originally an Amber Alert for the man and his 1-year-old daughter. They were later found unharmed.

"Miss Williams has raised the child since birth along with another 1-year-old child that was residing in house," Voss said.

Neighbors related to the incident.

"It's crazy, man," neighbor Brent George said. "It's hurting me right to my heart because I've got an unborn child on the way, too, so it hit me hard."

Police said Williams tried to cover up the crime before the 2-year-old was pronounced dead.

"On the way to Westside Regional Hospital to the emergency room, the caregiver stopped at the Toys 'R Us, which is right next door to the Westside Regional and placed some bloody clothes into the trash bin in the back of Toys 'R Us," Voss said.

Police said they found remnants of bleach on the 2-year-old's clothing, signifying Williams attempted to clean off the blood from the clothes.

The biological mother, 40-year-old Melanie Townsend, is in state prison for sexual battery, robbery and drugs. The girl had been in Williams' care since shortly after her birth, authorities said.

Williams was charged with first-degree murder, sexual battery, possession of cocaine and possession of marijuana with intent to deliver, authorities said. She was being held at the Broward County Jail without bond, and a judge denied her bond on Tuesday.

POSTED: 7:58 pm EDT October 17, 2007
UPDATED: 8:25 am EDT October 18, 2007

SUNRISE, Fla. -- A 2-year-old was killed while a 1-year-old child was in the house on Monday, and authorities said both of the children had been abandoned by their biological parents.

The children were in the care of Tyra Williams, the same woman who was arrested and charged with killing the 2-year-old.

William's ex-boyfriend, Eddie Ingram, said he was not home when Williams allegedly raped and killed 2-year-old Jada Woodson in Sunrise. Another child, 1-year-old Eddiesha Ingram-Williams, was in the home when Woodson was killed.

The Department of Children and Families took the 1-year-old away from Ingram, but he found out on Wednesday that the child was not his.

Ingram said Williams claimed the 1-year-old was his daughter. However, authorities said the baby had been given to Williams by the baby's biological parents when she was just two weeks old because DCF had already taken three of their children away.

"My main concern was that the child was not with these parents, who had a bad history," Yaritza Navarro of DCF-Broward said. "Tyra had no children of her own. She had adequate placement, she had no criminal history, and so I allowed the child to stay there."

The DCF in Miami was called to investigate abuse allegations at Williams' home in July.

"She denied having any children in her custody to the investigators, so the case was closed," Navarro said.

Authorities said they are looking into why investigators in Broward County knew Williams had children in her care when Miami-Dade County did not.

"We just can't turn off feelings like a switch," Ingram's sister Patrelle Williams said.

Ingram's sister is seeking custody of the 1-year-old.

"I want everything," judge Antonio Marin said. "I mean, a background check, fingerprints, local, FBI."

The judge called for the accountability in hopes it would prevent another tragic death like Woodson's.

"See if there's some lessons learned if, in fact, we could have done something so that we can prevent other child deaths in the future," Jack Moss with DCF-Broward said.

The DCF continued the investigation into Woodson's death. They conducted a home study at Patrelle Williams' home to determine if she is fit to care for Eddiesha Ingram-Williams.

Latronda Harris, 34, has been charged with first degree murder following a toddler's death in Harvey.

Harris appeared in 6th District Court in Markham on Christmas morning, and bond was set at $1 million, according to Harvey spokeswoman Sandra Alvarado. Harris' next court was set for Jan. 16.

On Sunday, the Harvey Police Department responded to a medical emergency at Harris' address, 171 E. 154th Street, and found Shawn Leggette, 19 months, unresponsive.

Leggette was left in Harris' care and had been living with his relatives for some time, Harvey police said. During an interview, Harris admitted to beating the 19-month-old, which resulted in his death, police said.

Leggette was pronounced dead at 2:31 a.m. Sunday at Ingalls Memorial Hospital in Harvey, a spokeswoman for the Cook County medical examiner's office said. The child died from multiple injuries consistent with abuse, she said, and an autopsy Sunday found the death consistent with a homicide,

The Illinois Department of Children and Family Services also is investigating Leggette's death, according to spokesman Kendall Marlowe, who said DCFS has had no prior contact with the boy's family.

WESTLAND, Mich. -- Police tell Local 4 a Westland man who said he wanted his girlfriend to have an abortion is accused of making it happen, when she refused.

The woman lost the baby, and now the boyfriend is charged with beating her.

Last week Daniel Jarrett II showed up while his girlfriend was visiting from Texas and staying at a friend's apartment near Warren and Central City in Westland.

Two witnesses told police Jarrett punched and kicked her in the stomach.

His 19-year-old girlfriend was six months pregnant.

She miscarried a couple of days later, and Jarrett turned himself in to police last weekend.

On Wednesday, Jarrett was charged with a felony, which carries a possible 20-year sentence.

He pleaded not guilty.

Columbia) - A Columbia woman has been charged with homicide by child abuse after her child tested positive for cocaine and died four days after birth.

Lorraine Patrick, 28, was arrested Tuesday night.

Lexington County deputies say Patrick gave birth at 23 weeks to a baby girl on September 29. Investigators say both she and the girl tested positive for cocaine at the hospital.

The child died four days later. The girl was never given a name.

"It could've been prevented," Lexington County Sheriff James Metts said. "If the mother hadn't ingested cocaine the child would be alive instead of dead. It's a sad situation all the way around."

A registered nurse at the hospital contacted the Lexington County Coroner’s Office on October 3 to report the death.

Deputies say tests performed by hospital personnel indicate that Patrick’s ingestion of cocaine while she was pregnant caused her baby girl to die prematurely as a result of "a pulmonary hemorrhage, inner cranial bleeding and metabolic acidosis from intrauterine cocaine exposure."

Investigators with the sheriff's department and the U.S. Marshal's office then determined that Patrick would be at a business on North Main Street in Columbia Tuesday. That's when they arrested her. Officers say she physically resisted arrest at first, and that officers used physical force to subdue her.

Brenda Jeffcoat, who says she helped raise Patrick and the suspect's two children, was shocked to witness the arrest.

"He said, 'I'm here for Lorraine Patrick for murder.' 'Murder?!?'," Jeffcoat responded. "I almost went through the floor."

Patrick made a first appearance in court Wednesday, but a bond was not set. That will happen in circuit court at a later date.

Jeffcoat says she's torn between her love for Patrick and her anger over a newborn's death.

"I'm torn up about it," she said. "I just don't believe it, but that's what I hear."

Prosecutors Accuse Man Of Killing Baby Son
Medical Examiner: 9-Month-Old Died Of Blunt Trauma

POSTED: 10:38 am CST January 17, 2008
UPDATED: 6:22 pm CST January 17, 2008

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Prosecutors filed a second-degree murder charge against a Kansas City man in the death of his 9-month-old son.

Jackson County prosecutors also charged Daniel T. Taft, 27, with child endangerment and child abuse. He turned himself in Wednesday after the medical examiner ruled Savion Taft's death a homicide.

The medical examiner said the child died Nov. 3 of blunt trauma due to a fractured skull, broken ribs, abdominal injuries and a lacerated heart.

Police said the boy's mother called for officers after arriving home to find the baby unresponsive in his crib.

At the time, police said, Taft claimed that "everything was normal" when he put the child down for a nap.

After the medical examiner's ruling was issued Wednesday, Taft told police he had left the child asleep upstairs and gone downstairs to smoke cocaine and PCP, prosecutors said in a news release.

When the baby fell out of bed and started crying, Taft told police he punched the child several times with a closed fist, jerked him out of bed and squeezed him, according to prosecutors, who requested Taft be held on a $500,000 cash-only bond.
