2 Arrests in Dog Fighting Ring Bust
Dead Dogs Found At Germantown Home

Philadelphia - Police have so far charged two people in connection with an alleged dog fighting and training ring at a home on Binghurst Street in Germantown (Coontown).

Investigators said they found two dead dogs in the back of the home and five others were alive but badly hurt. All of them are pit bulls.

"One dog has fresh wounds all over his face, his face is swelled up," said Greg Jordan, a police officer with the Pennsylvania Humane Society.

Their faces are precious and innocent but their bodies bear the scars of dogs investigators said were bred and trained to fight.

"That's sad," said a neighbor who didn't want to be identified by name. She lives near the home where animal
cruelty investigators said they uncovered a dog training and fighting facility.

She's one of at least two neighbors who called police. "I woke up to the sound of a dog screaming. That's when I realized they had the dogs back there, one in with the other. One was on the ground," the neighbor said.

Sunday afternoon, investigators closed in and made a gruesome discovery."We had two trash bags with dogs in them," said Jordan.

They searched seven grassy lots of vacant homes on that same street and found five other pit bulls. They were hidden, scarred and emaciated. Investigators believe they were being used as bait for dogs being trained to fight. George Bengal with the Pennsylvania SPCA said, "Apparently the dogs were being brought from various locations in the city to this location to be trained to fight and to be trained as fighting dogs."

A neighbor claims this has been going on, off and on, for years at this home. She is glad it's over.
"It's really ugly and it's a horrib
le sound to hear."

Investigators said the homeowner doesn't live at the house but at another property in the area. They believe he knew what was going on and have charged him with felony dog fighting. An 18-year old man is also charged with felony dog fighting. Police said he showed up on the scene and tried to run with one of the dogs until they caught him. Police also have arrest warrants for other suspects they are looking for.
