MARYLAND HEIGHTS — Police said they have broken a band of daytime burglars who carried a handgun and may have worn masks while hauling jewelry, guns and electronics from a score of apartments in Maryland Heights and west St. Louis County.

One disguise confiscated by cops was a ghoulish "Scream" black mask with ghost face, inspired by the Edvard Munch painting.

Maryland Heights police said the break came Tuesday with a tip from a renter who saw a flier about the crimes.

It led to the arrests of four men from St. Louis who were charged on Wednesday in St. Louis County: Anthony Gibson, 20, of the 5400 block of Arlington Avenue; Jermaine Hayes, 24, of t
he 4700 block of Lewis Place; Anthony Wilbourn, 19, of the 100 block of Neville Walk; and Eric Dunn, 20, of the 9800 block of Lilac Drive.

All were charged with second-degree burglary and felony stealing.

Capt. Scott Will said police believe the men are responsible for at least 20 burglaries in the last three or four weeks. Police from at least three other cities in St. Louis County have identified some of the recovered property, he said.

"Although they've been charged with property crimes, these four are certainly dangerous," Will said. "They were armed and made it very clear they were prepared to use a gun if need be."

In addition to the Scream mask, police found two ski masks in the men's gear. Officers recovered several dozen pieces of stolen property, including big-screen TVs, laptop computers, guns and jewelry.

Bail for Gibson, Hayes and Wilbourn was set at $30,000 each. Bai
l for Dunn was $15,000.
