5-Year-Old Takes Gun to School

May 21, 2005 ”” A Queens man was arrested after his 5-year-old son took a loaded semiautomatic gun to elementary school and gave it to another 5-year-old child, police said Friday.

An investigation began after a second child's mother called 911 Wednesday night and said her son had brought a gun home from P.S. 16 in the Corona section of Queens, police said in a statement. Police also found an ammunition magazine with the gun, said police spokesman Detective Brian Sessa.

The next day, police arrested the first child's father, 25-year-old Tesfari Davis. Police said they were cha
rging Davis with three counts of criminal possession of a weapon and two counts of endangering the welfare of a child.

Neither child was hurt, Sessa said. They were not identified because they are minors.

P.S. 16 has about 1,300 kindergarten to fifth-grade students, according to the city's Department of Education. Telephone messages left at the school and with the local instructional superintendent after business hours Friday were not immediately returned. There was no telephone number listed for Davis at the address given by police.
