A neighbor turns in an Augusta man for training animals for dogfighting.

Ulysses Thomas Jr. is charged with Aggravated Cruelty to Animals. He was arrested Monday night after a neighbor called law enforcement.

According to Capt. Scott Peebles of the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office, the neighbor saw one man holding a smaller dog on the ground while Thomas trained three bigger, more aggressive dogs to attack the smaller one. Peebles says it is typical for criminals to use smaller dogs to train the bigger ones to be more aggressive and get the taste for blood.

This was all happening behind a home on the 2100 block of Steven’s Road, Monday night. But, Peebles says very few people ever call law enforcement when they hear of dogfighting in their neighborhood.

We're told Thomas faces a maximum sentence of 1 to 5 years and a maximum fine of $15,000.
