Summit County Jail

Lewis Napoleon Jr.

AKRON, Ohio â┚¬“ An Akron man pleaded guilty to charges stemming from the burglary of a Morse Street home and the fatal beating of the family's dog.

Melvin Prince Jr., 18, pleaded guilty Tuesday to burglary, animal cruelty and two counts of theft for the Feb. 9 burglary of the home of Donald and Paulette Hixenbaugh. Prosecutors said Prince, who was 17 at the time, and Lewis Napoleon Jr., 22, also of Akron, broke into the home of the elderly couple and were confronted with the family's 5-pound, 8-year-old Shih Tzu. Prosecutors said the men beat the dog and threw it against the wall.

The dog was so badly injured that it had to be euthanized.

Prince will be sentenced Dec. 29 by Summit County Common Pleas Court Judge Judith Hunter.

Napoleon is scheduled to stand trial on Feb. 18.

Melvin J. Prince

AKRON, Ohio — An 18-year-old Akron man was sentenced today to four years in prison for breaking into a Morse Street home and fatally beating the family's dog.

Melvin Prince Jr. pleaded guilty to burglary, theft and animal cruelty.

Prince was 17 when he and Lewis Napoleon Jr., 22, burglarized the home of Donald and Paulette Hixenbaugh Feb. 9, prosecutors said. The Hixenbaughs were not home.

The burglars were confronted by a barking 5-pound, 8-year-old Shih Tzu. The men kicked her into a wall and beat her.

They ransacked the house and stole cash, jewelry, a computer, two shotguns, prescription drugs, checks and collectible German beer steins and liquor bottles. They left in the elderly couple's pickup truck.

The dog could not be saved.

Summit County Common Pleas Judge Judith Hunter imposed the sentence.

Napoleon's trial is set for Feb. 18.
