Sterling Bates Pleads Guilty To Engaging In, Watching Dogfights

HOUSTON -- A man is headed to prison for his role in a Houston dogfighting ring, KPRC Local 2 reported.

Sterling Bates was sentenced Wednesday to 15 months in prison after he pleaded guilty to intentionally causing a dog to fight during a match in northwest Houston in August.

Belinda Smith, an assistant District Attorney in the Animal Cruelty Section, said evidence showed the fight involving Bates' dog went on for more than an hour and caused injuries to both dogs.

nBates, 35, also pleaded guilty to being a spectator at a dogfight. He received a 100-day jail sentence on that charge.

Investigators said Bates was part of one of the largest dogfighting rings in the country. In November, more than 50 people were arrested and charged with engaging in dogfighting or attending fights.
