MONTEZUMA, Iowa — Police say a man in the country illegally has been charged with murder in the death of Iowa college student Mollie Tibbetts.

A charge of 1st-degree murder has been filed against 24-year-old Cristhian Bahena Rivera. If convicted, the charge carries a mandatory sentence of life in prison.

Investigators say they used surveillance video in tracking down Rivera. The video showed Tibbetts jogging in a rural area near her hometown of Brooklyn as well as Rivera’s car.

Police had searched the area but noted her body was found in a field, covered with corn stalks.

Mollie Tibbetts Dead: Student Body Found, Report Says

Mollie Tibbetts is dead, and her body has been found in rural Iowa not far from her hometown, according to Fox and multiple other news outlets. That’s the tragic news out of Iowa about the missing Brooklyn college student who vanished July 18, 2018.

A suspect was arrested, and he is subject to an immigration hold. “We have confirmed with Homeland Security that…he is an illegal alien,” authorities said during a news conference of the suspect, Christian Rivera, 24, who resides in rural Poweshiek County, Iowa. They said that Christian Rivera had been in the area for four to seven years. He was charged with an accusation of first-degree murder.

Here’s a photo of Christian Rivera:

Family of dairy farm where Cristhian Rivera worked speaks out
Updated: Aug 22, 2018 04:22 AM CDT

POWESHIEK COUNTY - 24-year-old Cristhian Rivera is behind bars Tuesday night, accused of murdering 20-year-old Mollie Tibbetts. Now his former employer is speaking out.

The farm where Rivera used to work is a dairy farm called Yarabee Farms. It's owned by the Lang family. Craig Lang is a former Republican candidate for Secretary of Agriculture. A statement was sent to Local 5 Tuesday night.

Lang is also the former president of the Iowa Farm Bureau.

Lawyer: Mollie Tibbetts murder suspect is not an illegal immigrant
By Tamar Lapin and Laura Italiano

A judge Wednesday ordered the accused murderer of 20-year-old Iowan college student Mollie Tibbetts held on $5 million bail — as his scumbag defense lawyer claimed his client is not an illegal immigrant  and lashed out at President Trump, calling him “sad and sorry” for commenting on the case.

“Sad and sorry Trump has weighed in on this matter in national media which will poison the entire possible pool of jury members,” the accused killer’s lawyer said Wednesday in a court document.

Wednesday was also the first court appearance for accused killer Cristhian Bahena Rivera, 24, whom investigators have said is in the country illegally.

Rivera, who describes himself on social media as Mexican, came to the United States as a minor, said his scumbag defense lawyer, Allan Richards, and has a 7th- or 8th-grade education.

The lawyer is claiming in a court document filed Wednesday that the government is wrong in describing Rivera as an illegal immigrant.

The document names Craig Lang, a former head of the Iowa Board of Regents and a prominent state Republican, as the source of that claim. Rivera has worked for four years at Lang’s family dairy farm , Lang said in a statement Wednesday, adding that Rivera was “vetted through the government’s E-Verify system and was an employee in good standing.”

Rivera’s lawyer does not offer any independent proof of Rivera’s immigration status. Meanwhile, the Washington Post said Wednesday that a law enforcement source says Rivera used a stolen ID to bypass the system.

Tibbetts’ body was found Tuesday, more than a month after her disappearance.

Tibbetts’ alleged murderer’s illegal status has made her case a lightning rod in the immigration debate in the waning months of the midterm elections.

At a rally in West Virginia on Tuesday night, Trump had blamed Tibbetts’ death on lax immigration enforcement. “If he had not been in the country, she would be alive today,” Trump told cheering supporters. “Should’ve never happened … The immigration laws are such a disgrace … We have to get more Republicans. We have to get ‘em.”

Mollie Tibbetts investigation: New details reveal Tibbetts, Rivera's girlfriend were Facebook friends

Friday, August 24, 2018 02:28PM
BROOKLYN, Iowa --
New details in the Mollie Tibbetts case indicate that she was stabbed to death, and new details reveal that it's possible the suspect's girlfriend knew Tibbetts.

Mollie Tibbetts died from "multiple sharp force injuries," according to a preliminary autopsy report released by the Iowa State Medical Examiner Thursday. This would indicate she died after being stabbed, ABC News reports.

Tibbetts' death was officially ruled a homicide, and Cristhian Bahena Rivera has been charged with first-degree murder.

New details continue to come to light in the case. Tibbetts attended the same high school as the suspect's girlfriend, Iris Monarrez, ABC News learned on Friday morning. It appears the two were friends on Facebook, but investigators stated that this does not mean they were personally acquainted. Because Brooklyn, Iowa, is such a small town, they may have connected simply because they went to the same school.

Earlier this week, investigators said they were uncertain how Tibbetts was killed or whether she was sexually assaulted. They've made no mention of recovering a weapon linked to the death.

The examiner did not release additional details about the injuries Tibbetts suffered or what caused them, but said further examination of her body may result in additional findings. Autopsy reports are confidential under Iowa law, except for the cause and manner of death.

Mollie was a White-hating thot. It appears she didn't like die-versity up close and personal.

Mollie Tibbetts’ aunt speaks out: Evil comes in every color

The aunt of an Iowa college student who authorities say  was murdered by an illegal immigrant is imploring people not to make assumptions based on the alleged killer’s nationality.

“Please remember, evil comes in EVERY color,” Billie Jo Calderwood wrote Tuesday night on Facebook, alongside a black-and-white photo of her 20-year-old niece Mollie "I hate YT" Tibbetts.

“Our family has been blessed to be surrounded by love, friendship and support throughout this entire ordeal by friends for all different nations and races :barf2:,” she added. “From the bottom of our hearts, thank you.”

A 24-year-old illegal immigrant named Cristhian Rivera was charged with the University of Iowa student’s murder Tuesday — and politicians quickly used the case to call for tighter immigration restrictions.

On Wednesday, Calderwood shared a post from someone named Kasie Schultz Taylor that asked people to “not compound the atrocity of what happened to [Mollie] by adding racism and hate to the equation.”

Mollie Tibbetts’ dou chebagdad: Don’t use my daughter’s death to promote ‘racist’ views
By Max Jaeger
September 2, 2018 | 11:49am

The as shole father of slain Iowa college student Mollie Tibbetts blasted people using his daughter’s death to promote “profoundly racist” views — a day after President Trump’s son published a screed  blaming Democrats’ “radical open-borders agenda” for her demise.

In an op-ed published in the Des Moines Register Friday, Donald Trump Jr. called Democrats “despicable” for their responses to Tibbetts’ death at the hands of an illegal Mexican immigrant — despite the family’s repeated requests Mollie’s death not be used as a political football.

And so Tibbetts’ dad Rob took to the paper’s pages Saturday to lambast those who cynically use the murder to score political points — using Trump Jr.’s own words against him.

“I encourage the debate on immigration; there is great merit in its reasonable outcome. But do not appropriate Mollie’s soul in advancing views she believed were profoundly racist. The act grievously extends the crime that stole Mollie from our family and is, to quote Donald Trump Jr., ‘heartless’ and ‘despicable,’” he wrote.

It was the only time he mentioned Trump Jr. by name in the column, published in the same paper one day after the president’s son’s.

“Allow us to grieve in privacy and with dignity. At long last, show some decency. On behalf of my family and Mollie’s memory, I’m imploring you to stop,” Rob continued.

While Trump Jr. used his soapbox to renew his father’s unfulfilled campaign promise of building a wall along the nation’s southern border, Rob Tibbetts sought to deflect blame away from the Latino community.

“The person who is accused of taking Mollie’s life is no more a reflection of the Hispanic community as white supremacists are of all white people. To suggest otherwise is a lie,” he wrote.

“To the Hispanic community, my family stands with you and offers its heartfelt apology. That you’ve been beset by the circumstances of Mollie’s death is wrong.”

Mollie Tibbetts’ accused killer wants trial moved to less-white area

The undocumented immigrant  charged with the murder of University of Iowa student Mollie Tibbetts wants to have his trial moved to a county where there’s more minority representation.

Attorneys for 24-year-old Cristhian Bahena Rivera filed a motion on Friday arguing that the Mexican national  should be tried outside of Iowa’s Poweshiek County because existing bias there makes it likely that “a fair and impartial trial cannot be preserved with a jury selected from that county,” the Des Moines Register reported.

Rivera, a former farmhand, was charged with first-degree murder in the abduction and stabbing death of 20-year-old Tibbetts.

The rising sophomore was last seen jogging through her hometown of Brooklyn, Iowa – about 70 miles east of Des Moines – on July 18.

She was reported missing the next day when she didn’t show up to her job at a daycare center.

Investigators recovered her body roughly a month later in a cornfield.

Rivera’s murder trial is slated to begin Sept. 3 at Poweshiek County Courthouse in Montezuma.

Lawyers for the murder suspect said they spoke with potential witnesses, including Latinos, who expressed fear  about testifying or cooperating in the investigation if the trial were to stay in Poweshiek County, according to the Des Moines Register.

“These individuals fear reprisals from locals who hold strong opinions concerning Latinos following [Rivera] being charged,” the attorneys wrote.

The motion went on to say: “Without venue where a minority population is substantially represented, [Rivera] cannot be fairly tried and any jury pool chosen will have to be stricken.”

Nearly three years to the day after (female American Citizen) Mollie Tibbetts disappeared while jogging near her hometown of Brooklyn, Iowa, Cristhian Bahena Rivera will be sentenced Thursday for her murder.

Bahena Rivera was convicted May 28 of first-degree murder in the death of Tibbetts, a 20-year-old University of Iowa student whose disappearance sparked a massive monthlong search effort and drew national attention. Police eventually traced a car seen circling near Tibbetts on surveillance video to Bahena Rivera, a local farmhand, who led them to the cornfield where her remains were hidden.

He is scheduled to be sentenced Thursday in Poweshiek County. The mandatory sentence for first-degree murder in Iowa is life in prison without parole.

Bahena Rivera initially denied knowing what had happened to Tibbetts, but over an 11-hour overnight interrogation, according to court filings, he admitted to seeing Tibbetts out jogging, finding her attractive and following her.

Tibbetts threatened to call police on him, he said in that interrogation, and he got angry, blacked out, and next remembered driving to the cornfield where he concealed her body.

The former farmhand convicted of kidnapping and killing 20-year old University of Iowa student Mollie Tibbetts was sentenced to life in prison with no chance for parole by a judge on Monday.
Cristhian Bahena Rivera, 27, a Mexican national migrant worker, was given the maximum penalty by Judge Joel D. Yates, who told Rivera at the hearing “You, and you alone, forever changed the lives of those who loved Mollie Tibbetts. And for that, you and you alone will receive the following sentence,” according to NBC.
Rivera was reportedly silent and emotionless as the sentencing was delivered.
Tibbetts went missing after going for a jog on July 18, 2018 in Brooklyn, Iowa. After a month-long investigation, Rivera led authorities to an open cornfield where Tibbetts body was found stabbed between seven and 12 times in the chest, neck and skull, according to prosecutors.

Rivera had testified using a translator that two mysterious masked men men showed up in his trailer the day Tibbetts went missing and forced him to take part in the killings.
He was convicted of the murder on May 28.
Rivera was scheduled to be sentenced in June, however Judge Yates agreed to delay the sentencing in order to schedule a hearing on a motion for a new trial after defense lawyers accused prosecutors of failing to disclose a sex-trafficking investigation near where the 20-year-old disappeared, according to ABC News.

The shocking delay came a week after defense attorneys asked for a new trial, claiming witnesses independently told police a man bragged to them about raping and murdering the college student and framing Bahena Rivera, the network reported.

Judge Yates ultimately denied the defense’s request for a new trial.
“In reviewing the evidence and testimony provided at trial, the court finds the verdict was not contrary to the weight of the evidence,” Yates wrote.
The case became highly politicized after former President Donald Trump blamed the murder on weak immigration laws.
