Woman pleads not guilty of abusing her daughter

A Jefferson County woman accused of abusing her 4-month-old daughter, who police said would require surgery for some of her wounds, has pleaded not guilty and will return to court April 18 for trial.

Colony Nicole Wilson, 25, appeared in court Monday with her attorney and informed Circuit Judge Laura Petro of her decision to reject prosecutor Leigh Gwathney's plea offer. It called for Wilson to plead guilty and serve 20 years in prison.

"She refused the offer, naturally," Wilson's attorney, John Waddell, said. "Nobody wants to go to prison for 20 years. We're going to trial. She says she's not guilty."

If convicted of aggravated child abuse, Wilson could

be sentenced to two to 20 years in prison.

Wilson's indictment says she
tortured, willfully abused, cruelly beat and otherwise maltreated Jameseha Nicole Wilson by means of excessive force.

Doctors at Children's Hospital last July found more than 10 fractures in different stages of healing and bruises on the baby's head, face and torso. The injuries were not life-threatening. Police investigated and later went to Wilson's Homewood apartment, where they found her in a bedroom under the covers.

Wilson, who remains out of jail on $10,000 bond, told Petro Monday that her daughter no longer lives with her.
