Nottingham: Everything we know so far about attack that left three dead
Two 19-year-old students and man in his 50s have been killed and at least three injured after a horrifying rampage through the city of Nottingham.
Detectives are questioning a 31-year-old man on suspicion of murder after a driver was seen being dragged out of a smashed-up white van by armed police and arrested on Tuesday. It is believed the older man’s van had been stolen and was driven at three people.
Police have not yet commented on whether the attack is being treated as terrorism, but it is understood that the suspect has a mental health history.
Here is everything that we know so far about the “shocking” attack:

  • The University of Nottingham has confirmed two of the victims are students. One has been confirmed as Barnaby Webber, and another named in reports as talented hockey player Grace Kumar.
  • Taunton-based Bishops Hull Cricket Club paid tribute to Mr Webber, who was one of its members, describing him as a “dear friend” and “key part” of the club. A former pupil of Taunton School also posted a tribute in the Old Tauntonians alumni group on Facebook, describing him as a “wonderful young man with much to look forward to”.
  • Miss Kumar played hockey for England’s U18 squad. England Hockey paid tribute to her as “a popular member” of the team, adding: “Our thoughts are with Grace’s family, friends, teammates and the whole hockey community at this time.”
  • In a statement, the University of Nottingham said: “We are shocked and devastated by the news and our thoughts are with those affected, their families and friends. We know this is likely to cause distress for staff and students in our community.”
  • Police arriving to Ilkeston Road found the two students had been stabbed to dead in the street leading to the city centre.

  • Officers were then called to another incident in Milton Street where a van had attempted to run over three people. One man remains in hospital in a critical condition while two others suffered minor injuries following that incident.
  • Witness Lynn Haggitt told Channel 4 News she saw a van hitting two people on Milton Street near the Theatre Royal about 5.30am. She said a man was treated for a serious head injury after the driver “went straight into them”.
  • A man in his 50s was also found dead from knife injuries in Magdala Road.
  • Police believe the attacker stole the older victim’s van before driving it at the pedestrians in Milton Street.
  • The vehicle was stopped by officers in Maple Street before the suspect was tasered and detained, Chief Constable Kate Meynell told reporters on Tuesday.
  • The 31-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder and he remains in police custody.
  • Witnesses described the man as “black with dreadlocks” and wearing a hat at the time he was arrested.
We are all deeply saddened by the news of the tragic death of Grace Kumar in Nottingham on Tuesday.

Grace was a popular member of the England U16 and U18 squads and our thoughts are with Grace’s family, friends, teammates and the whole hockey community at this time.

  • Police have not labelled the killings as an act of terrorism attack but it is understood that the man has a history of poor mental health. Police are keeping an “open mind” over the motive for the attack and believe there is “no-one else outstanding”, the Nottinghamshire force said.
  • Chief Constable Kate Meynell told reporters on Tuesday the force were not looking for anyone else in connection with the incidents and no further arrests had been made.
  • A terraced property with a For Sale sign was also under police guard on Ilkeston Road - where the first attack was reported. Staff at a neighbouring hairdresser claimed it had been raided last year.
  • Nottingham’s three Labour MPs, Nadia Whittome, Lilian Greenwood and Alex Norris, said they were “shaken” by the events.
  • Prime Minister Rishi Sunak thanked the emergency services for their response to the “shocking incident”, adding: “My thoughts are with those injured, and the family and loved ones of those who have lost their lives.”

  • Chief Constable Kate Meynell said: “At the moment, we believe that the suspect has stolen this man’s vehicle and driven it to Milton Street, where he is then driven at members of the public. We are still in the early stages of the investigation. I need to determine exactly what the motives were behind this attack.”
  • Ms Meynell added: “We are keeping an open mind and are working closely with counter-terrorism policing to establish the facts as we would normally do in this type of circumstance.”
  • A vigil held at Nottingham’s St Peter’s Church, in the city centre, on Tuesday was attended by hundreds of people.

He will appear at Nottingham Magistrates’ Court on Saturday, June 17.
The two 19-year-old students - Webber and Kumar - were walking home from a nightclub near the University of Nottingham halls of residence when they were stabbed just after 4am on Ilkeston Road.
The third victim, school caretaker Coates, was found dead two miles away on Magdala Road.
Police say a van was stolen from Coates and was later used to run over three people on Milton Street.

One man is in hospital in a critical condition and the two others are believed to have suffered minor injuries.

Chief Constable Kate Meynell, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “These charges are a significant development and arise as a result of our thorough investigation into these horrific incidents that occurred in our city.

"Our thoughts remain with the families and friends of all those affected by these attacks, and we will continue to provide support and reassurance.

"We would also ask people to respect the families’ wishes for privacy at this difficult time to allow them to grieve.
"This has been an incredibly sad time for our city and county, and we stand united with our communities as we come to terms with the effects of what has happened.
"We are keenly aware of the deep emotion being felt surrounding these tragic events and the high level of interest, not only in Nottingham and Nottinghamshire but also across the whole country.

“However, posting prejudicial information online about an active case could amount to contempt of court and, in the most serious cases, have the potential to cause the collapse of a trial."

GIRLFRIEND RAID

‘Model’ girlfriend of Nottingham attack suspect Valdo Calocane ‘has home raided by armed cops’

THE model girlfriend of Nottingham attack suspect Valdo Calocane had her home raided by armed cops, reports claim.

Calocane, 31, was charged with the murders of Barnaby Webber, Grace Kumar, both 19, and Ian Coates, 65, after he allegedly went on a rampage on Tuesday morning.

Barnaby and Grace, first-years at the University of Nottingham, were yards away from their halls after a night out while Ian was on his way to work as a school caretaker.

Calocane's girlfriend, 20, who is a model, lives in a student house on the same road as where the two teens were killed, reports The Times.

It's understood armed police raided the property on Tuesday following her lover's alleged spate of horrifying attacks.

Calocane, a former student at the same uni as his victims, used to lived in accommodation near where the stabbings took place.
He graduated last year in medical engineering where peers reportedly said he was "very quiet".

The suspected killer has also been accused of attempted murder of three people who were injured when they were hit by a van he stole from Ian.

He was unmasked yesterday when a clear photo was released for the first time.

The picture was taken last year by flatmates who lived with Calocane, who was born in the West African country of Guinea-Bissau - but grew up in Wales.
And neighbours claimed he used to sit "out the back of his house with his top off, smoking and drinking" - as it emerged he was looking for a job at the time of the attack.

Calocane was Tasered and cuffed after allegedly running at cops with a knife on Maples Street in Nottingham at 5.30am on Tuesday.

It came moments after a van stolen from victim Ian was used to ram into three pedestrians - leaving one, factory worker Wayne Birkett, fighting for his life.

Some 90 minutes before the arrest Grace and Barney's bodies were found in the street just 300 yards from their halls of residence on Ilkeston Road.

Ian's body was found two miles away from the students, on Magdala Road, at 5am.

And a man matching the description of the suspect was captured on CCTV trying to break into a homeless shelter through an open window in Mapperley at 4.08am.

While he studied at the same university as Barnaby and Grace, Nottinghamshire Police has said this is not thought to be connected to the killings.

A witness told yesterday how a fearless Grace bravely put herself in between the attacker and Barnaby.

Speaking to the MailOnline: "The boy and the girl were walking on their own, there was nobody else in the picture except the attacker, who came up from behind.

"He attacked the boy first – the girl had an opportunity to run away.

"But she didn't, she tried to get the man off her friend.

"She tried to save the boy."

The force was granted an extension to keep the suspect in custody for another 36 hours at around 3.15pm on Wednesday.

And officers were yesterday told they had until the early hours of Saturday to finish quizzing him.

Calocane, of no fixed address, was arrested at 5.30am on Tuesday when the van was eventually stopped.

Appearing at Nottingham Crown Court this morning, he was remanded in custody.

He appeared in court charged with three counts of murder and three count of attempted murder.
The alleged victims of the attempted murder were named in the charge as Sharon Miller, Marcin Gawronski and Wayne Birkett.

Calocane gave his name in court as Adam Mendes, which his solicitor confirmed was a name Calocane was also known by.
