Blacks blamed for city violence
Sean Parnell
February 22, 2005
POLICE have been asked to forcibly remove homeless Aborigines from inner Brisbane parks amid a highly charged political debate over the safety of city nightspots.
Police Minister Judy Spence yesterday identified Kurilpa Point in south Brisbane, where the Government is building a Gallery of Modern Art, as a problem area.
Responding to talkback radio claims that homeless Aborigines were responsible for most inner-city violence, Ms Spence said the Government could no longer tolerate violence and anti-social behaviour in the area, but had been unable to find alternative accommodation for those camping
at Kurilpa Point.
"The police regularly get complaints from the ge
neral public about the behaviour of some people down there," Ms Spence said. "It's true that the area does smell, that people seem to be using the public space down there for urination and defecation."
