MINNEAPOLIS — Police are investigating after an apparent altercation turned deadly Tuesday night in the Minneapolis' Stevens Square neighborhood.

According to the Minneapolis Police Department, squads responded to a report of shots fired at around 7 p.m. near East 19th Street and First Avenue South. When officers arrived, they found a man in his 20s who had been shot. Police said despite lifesaving efforts, the man died at the scene.

On Thursday the victim was identified as 24-year-old De'Jaun Marquise Michael Hall of Minneapolis. The Hennepin County Medical Examiner's Office says Hall died of multiple gunshot wounds, listing the manner of death as homicide.

Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O'Hara said the initial investigation indicates Hall was in a group of approximately 10 people when he got in an altercation with another man and shots were fired.

O'Hara made it clear he is unhappy with the current level of violence in Minneapolis, telling reporters it is the fourth homicide in the city this week.

“It’s frustrating because this is a location that we know has been problematic in the past," he explained. "We do have police presence here. It’s frustrating knowing that we can’t prevent everything. We’re here to try and speak on behalf of those that can no longer speak for themselves.”

Police encourage anyone with information about the homicide or the person responsible to call CrimeStoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477), or submit a tip electronically via the CrimeStoppers website.
