OLATHE, Kan. -- A Johnson County man was sentenced Tuesday for his role in a dogfighting ring.

It's the first dogfighting case in Johnson County and the first conviction, prosecutors said.

Reginald Anderson, 32, will spend at least a year behind bars. Anderson was sentenced in the Johnson County courthouse in Olathe for several counts, ranging from drug possession to animal abuse.

In June, Anderson admitted to the drug charges, but in the courtroom on Tuesday, refused to take responsibility for breeding pit bulls as fighting dogs.

Olathe officers found 19 dogs at his home, in what prosecutors described as terrible conditions. Fifteen of the dogs were puppies who had to be euthanized due to sickness. The remaining adult dogs were taken to local shelters.

Prosecutors said they are pleased with the sentence and believe that Anderson needs to spend time in prison.

Anderson's attorney said they disagree. "I think there is a question of appeal, of whether the state met its burden to prove that he was engaged in dog fighting," said attorney John Harvell Anderson.

At a hearing next Monday, they will decide what to do with the adult dogs still in area shelters.
