Markham man fined $2.5M for tax evasion

By Sarah Green, Toronto Sun

A Markham businessman will pay a $2.5-million fine after pleading guilty to falsifying documents to evade millions in taxes and duty. Jian Ping Liu, 47, who owns three wholesale and importing businesses in Markham, wrote false invoices, showing a lower value for the clothing he imported from China from 1998 to 2001, Bill Tu, spokesman for the Canadian Border Services Agency, said.

He skirted the limits on
clothing that can be imported from China by declaring other items, Tu said.

All told, Liu evaded paying $3.7 million in taxes and duty between June 1998 and April 2001.

Liu pleaded guil

ty
n December to charges under the Customs Act and Export and Import
Permits Act. He was sentenced last week at the Ontario Superior Court of Justice in Toronto.
