Columbus man arrested for allegedly donating funds to ISIL

COLUMBUS, Ohio

The U.S. Attorney's Office announced a Columbus man was arrested Monday on a charge of providing or attempting to provide support to a terrorist organization.

Aaron T. Daniels, 20, is accused of communicating with ISIL for more than a year and donating money.


Task Force agents arrested Daniels as he attempted to leave Columbus with the intent of traveling to Libya and joining ISIL.

According to the complaint, Daniels sent $250 in January to now deceased ISIL operative, Abu Isa Al-Amriki.

The complaint also states that Daniels set up email addresses and a social media account using the aliases Harun Muhammad and Abu Yusef. He used those accounts to expresses his interest in jihad and to seek funding to travel to Syria and Afghanistan.

Daniels allegedly told an undercover FBI agent that he wanted to travel to Trinidad as the beginning of his trip to Libya. He purchased a plane ticket to travel from Columbus to Houston where he would then go to Trinidad.

Daniels faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison if convicted.
