Man Reportedly Left Washington Hospital Friday Night

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Police said Saturday that they have a suspect following Thursday's murder of a Columbus police officer.

Daryl Martez Lawrence

Authorities are searching for Daryl Martez Lawrence, of Columbus. Sgt. Brent Mull said that Lawrence, 29, was receiving treatment at the Howard University Hospital in Washington, D.C., Friday night.

Police are calling Lawrence a suspect following Thursday's shooting death of Columbus police Officer Bryan Hurst. He was killed during a robbery at Fifth-Third Bank, located on East

Broad Street, near McNaughten Road.

Hurst, 33, was working special duty at the bank when a man in a ski mask tried t
o rob it. Authorities said that the robber was wounded in an exchange of gunfire with the officer.

According to Mull, Lawrence told Howard University Hospital workers that he was the victim of a robbery and suffered a gunshot wound. An officer was summoned to the hospital and took a report. As the officer was verifying the claim filed, Lawrence fled the hospital, Mull said.

Lawrence is to be charged for filing a false report. If he is arrested, Columbus police ask that Lawrence be held for questioning in Hurst's shooting death.

Police said Lawrence is 5 feet 4 inches tall, weighing 155 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes.

He has a half-moon tattoo over his right eye; "KENNEDY" on the right side of his neck, a cross and a lion and "GOD'S CHOW" on his left arm, police said.

According to police, Lawrence might be in a 199
9 da
rk red Chrysler 300M Sedan four-door, with Ohio license plate number FB65MD or a 2001 Black Chevrolet Suburban, four-door, with Ohio license plate number DCC4343.

"We consider this man armed and dangerous," Mull said.

A training class was going on to the left of the entrance as the robber walked in the bank at about 10:35 a.m. There were five or six trainees standing together, and that played a key role in what happened next, NBC 4's Mike Bowersock reported.

Hurst was standing at the south end of the teller counter and had a clear shot at the robber, but that would have put the training class in the firing line, Bowersock reported. If Hurst missed or a bullet went through the robber, one of the trainees could have been hit.

Hurst moved toward the center of the counter, giving up a wall he could have used for cover, Bowersoc
k report
ed. That gave him more of a direct shot, and got the training class out of the line of fire. It also put him in the open, Bowersock reported.

In an enhanced surveillance photo, it is believed that the robber fired his gun. It was poin
ting straight ahead. At that point, Hurst and the robber were about 5 to 10 feet apart. That's when Hurst was shot. He managed to get a shot off at the shooter through the counter as he went down, Bowersock reported.

Besides possibly being shot, the shooter also might have been cut on his face by glass as he exited the bank.

Mull said investigators have linked the shooter to another bank robbery. Investigators said they have evidence that the man also robbed the Sky Bank on Bethel Road on Sept. 8, 2004.

That crime also was a "takeover" style of robbery, as the robber ordered everyone to the floor. The robber then went behind the counter, removed money from the drawers and placed it into a bag. In that robbery, the man&#
39;s gun fir
ed, narrowly missing a bank employee. That robber had nearly the same description as the shooter in Thursday's attempted robbery.

Suspected Cop Killer Caught

The manhunt for a suspected cop killer that started in Ohio and led to DC may have ended Sunday morning back in Columbus.

Two television stations in that city are reporting the suspect in the attempted bank robbery and shooting has been arrested at a Columbus home.

Police didn't immediately return calls. Authorities named 29-year-old Daryl Lawrence as a suspect Saturday. He allegedly fled Howard University Hospital on Friday.

Police say he was getting treatment for a gunshot wound while a police officer checked his story that he was shot during a robbery.

Police haven't said
r
how they determined Lawrence is a suspect in Thursday's shooting of an off-duty police officer, who was
working as a bank guard.

The FBI filed an arrest warrant for Lawrence on a federal bank robbery charge yesterday, and DC police have charged him with filing a false report.

Suspect In Officer's Death Captured In Columbus
Lawrence Taken Into Custody

POSTED: 9:42 am EST January 9, 2005
UPDATED: 6:52 pm EST January 9, 2005

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The man who police identified as a suspect in a police officer's shooting death was captured Sunday morning.

Daryl Martez Lawrence was taken into custody at about 9:20 a.m. inside a home in the 900 block of East 21st Avenue, NBC 4's Barbra Flannigan reported.

Officers responded to a domestic call from a woman who lives inside the house. They discovered Lawrence inside, Flannigan reported.

"Mr. Lawrence was quickly recognized and taken into custody on a fede

ral bank robbery warrant," Columbus police Deputy Chief Steve Gammill said. "Mr. Lawrence was s
urprised by the police presence but offered no resistance."

On Saturday, Lawrence, 29, was named the suspect in Columbus police Officer Bryan Hurst's shooting death. Hurst was killed Thursday morning during a robbery at an east Columbus bank.

Hurst, 33, was working special duty at Fifth-Third Bank, located on East Broad Street, near McNaughten Road, when a man in a ski mask tried to rob it. Authorities said that the robber was wounded in an exchange of gunfire with the officer.

Following Thursday's shooting, Lawrence was believed to have been driven to Washington, D.C., by a female acquaintance, NBC 4's Mike Bowersock reported.

At 5:55 a.m. Friday, Lawrence arrived at Howard University Hospital, using the name Shawn Jones, from California, claiming he was shot during an attempted robbery in a nearby neighborhood, Bowersock reported.

Lawrence was treat
ed f
or nearly 10 hours for a gunshot wound to the left arm and shoulder, but escaped from the emergency room when police began questionin
g him, Bowersock reported.

At 6 p.m. Friday, about two hours after Lawrence fled the hospital, Columbus Crime Stoppers received an anonymous tip, detailing Lawrence's whereabouts, the hospital where he was being treated and the fake name he allegedly used, Bowersock reported.

Sources told NBC 4 that police believe Lawrence returned to Columbus early Saturday and police were tracking cellular phone calls made by his female acquaintance, whom they believe he was with the entire time.

Following his arrest Sunday, Lawrence was taken to police headquarters. Officers who saw him said he appeared lethargic. He was also in pain, missing a finger.

Lawrence was then transported to Grant Medical Center in an unmarked police van, taken in a side entrance.

Authorities said Tamara Gunnell placed the domestic phone call to police Sunday, Flannigan
reporte
d.

Neighbors told NBC 4 that Gunnell rents the home and lives there with her 10-year-old child. Investigators removed bags and boxes of evidence fr
om the home. They also examined two cars inside the garage. One was a Chrysler that was registered to Gunnell. The other was a classy red Oldsmobile which reportedly belongs to a relative.

There was no word on whether either of the vehicles was used to travel to and from Washington, Flannigan reported.

Police in Washington charged Lawrence on Saturday with filing a false police report. Hours later, the FBI filed an arrest warrant for Lawrence on a federal bank robbery charge, NBC 4 reported.

Hurst was an officer for eight years, a husband for two years and a father for six months, NBC 4's Monique Ming Laven reported.

The Fraternal Order of Police, Capital City Lodge No. 9, has established a fund for Hurst's family. Donations should be made to the Officer Bryan Hurst Memorial Fund and can be sent or delivere
d to any Fif
th-Third Bank in Central Ohio. All donations will be sent directly to Hurst's family, according to the FOP.

Murder Suspect May Be Tied To Bank Robberies

The man suspected of killing Officer Bryan Hurst is also suspected in a string of bank robberies.

The FBI says Daryl Lawrence may be responsible for a robbery at the Sky Bank on Bethel Road, another one at the Key Bank in Westerville and a robbery at the Fifth Third Bank on East Broad Street last year.

The Fifth Third Bank is the same one where Officer Hurst was shot and killed.

The FBI says a female friend drove Lawrence to Washington DC for medical treatment after the robbery, but her lawyer says she didn't do it willingly and that she was forced.

Christopher Cooper, the woman's lawyer, says, "It's been a very traumatic event in her life

. She had no idea who this person was, what this person had done and it's
flipped her world upside down."

His client is said to be cooperating with police.

It took just one anonymous tip into Crime Stoppers Friday night, before Lawrence was arrested Sunday morning.

Crime Stoppers says, "The person that called gave us really good information to the point that I was excited, where I knew this was a good lead on it."

That tip took the case to Washington DC where police say Lawrence used an alias at the hospital. There, doctors treated him Friday morning for what an FBI affidavit describes as a gun shot wound to his left hand, fingers and left arm.

Surveillance pictures from the bank shooting happen to show the suspect holding his left side as he fled.

Sources tell 10TV the suspect's blood from inside the bank, on the sidewalk and in the parking lot will be compared to blood and bullet fragments removed from Lawrence while he was in Washington D
C.
Lawrence remains under guard at Grant Medical Center until he can be arraigned in court.

A guilty verdict has been rendered in the trial of Daryl Lawrence. Lawrence shot and killed Columbus Police Officer Bryan Hurst during a bank hold up last January.

The jury deliberated for four hours before unanimously finding Lawrence guilty on all charges, including armed robbery and the murder of Officer Hurst.
Hurst's widow, Marissa, left the courtroom happy, but says she is not completely satisfied.

In January of 2005, Officer Bryan Hurst was working extr
a duty to help support his family when he was shot and killed during that botched bank robbery.

Surveillance tape caught Lawrence with a gun in hand inside the bank. Police say Lawrence later admitted to the shooting.

After the guilty verdict, Marissa Hurst said that there was a sense of a relief and that there was a small part of her burden that was lifted, but that she will not be totally satisfied until after the penalty phase.

The penalty phase in the trial will begin Wednesday and the jury will decide if Lawrence will die for this crime.
